Sloane brushed her check lightly against Lucas’s palm. “Tomorrow I’ll run one last check–up for Mr. Jeffrey; after that, we can book the flight.”

The next morning, after finishing Jeffrey’s acupuncture session, Sloane packed away the needles and instructed Shawn, who stood nearby. “After this treatment, all the toxins in your grandfather’s system will be completely cleared. From now on, he just needs to follow the herbal prescription I wrote and focus on recovery.”

“Got it.” Shawn nodded earnestly. “I’ll make sure they follow your instructions exactly.”

Once she finished explaining the treatment plan, Sloane turned to Jeffrey. “Even though you’re much better now, Mr. Jeffrey, we’re planning to leave today.”

“So soon?” Shawn blinked, then quickly corrected himself. “I mean–Dr. Rivers, you and Mr. Hawthorne saved my life; I haven’t even had the chance to repay you, and you’re already leaving?”

He couldn’t quite explain why, but from the moment he’d first met Sloane, he’d felt an inexplicable sense of familiarity. Maybe it was because she’d saved him; maybe it was because she looked so much like his aunt. Either way, he couldn’t help hoping she’d stay a little longer.

“One of my close friends is getting engaged,” Sloane said with a smile. “So we need to head back as soon as possible.”

“That’s wonderful news–you should definitely be there to celebrate.” Jeffrey finally spoke, his voice steadying. “Dr. Rivers, next time you come to Mirevia, you must visit the Oliver family again. Let us properly show our hospitality.”

“Of course,” Sloane replied with a warm smile.

Just as Jeffrey was about to say something else, the study door burst open. Kaizen strode in, clutching a set of satellite images. “Dad, we’ve got news about Beth!”

Jeffrey instantly sat upright, his voice trembling. “Where?”

“The Ravoth Black Desert.” Kaizen spread out the satellite map and pointed to a pitch–black section. “Right here, at the center of this dead zone.”

Sloane drew in a sharp breath. As a medical student, she’d heard her mentor mention that terrifying place–known as the Grave of the Desert.
