The tension that fell between my brother and me was so thick I could hardly breathe. I searched his face, but he wore no expression at all. Then, suddenly, he chuckled and gave me a long stare.

“Are you drunk already?” he asked. But when I didn’t smile or answer, he paused, frowning. “You’re serious?”

I nodded slowly.

“I am.”

“An Ashmere… You mean… the warrior clan?”

“They are like family,” I said softly. “Just like you Abyss.”

Hades turned away, sighing heavily before meeting my gaze again.

“How did you know?”

“She is the Alpha of Ash Pack.”

“Ash Pack?

“The pack where the Ashmeres live. Her father was the warlord on the battlefield five years ago, Hades. Her mother was the general we cornered, and her brother… he was the strategist we…” My voice trailed off, and I exhaled shakily. “I was stunned when I found out.”

“I’m still stunned myself. Does she know who you are now? Has she broken up with you?” he asked.

I stared at him in disbelief.

“Don’t break my heart with that question. Zephyrine and I are still very much together.” I sighed. “We made love just last night.”

“So she doesn’t know you’re half Lycan, half demon? A warlord who fought on the battlefield five years ago side by side with the Abyss?”

I shook my head.

“I only told her the defeated demons took refuge in my kingdom. Hades, remember the goddess of war everyone spoke about? The one who defeated Xyrrha? That was Zephyrine. She was the one who led the battle. The one who shattered the spell.”

Again, my brother went still, stunned. He stared at me in awe before frowning and shaking his head.

“You sure this isn’t fate, little brother?”

“That’s what I asked myself when I first heard the truth from her. I couldn’t think straight for a long time. And I’m worried Father won’t accept her or the Abyss.”

Hades went quiet, then nodded.

He only shrugged, turning to face me with a smirk.

“We can kill Kiara anytime, even before the wedding. Then I won’t have to endure it. What do you say?”

I didn’t respond. I only returned to the bed and sat, my thoughts heavy. I had learned from the greatest. Death was always the simplest way to remove an obstacle.

I studied my brother, and for a moment I wondered why he admired me so much. He wasn’t judging me for loving an Ashmere, someone from the very family that had slaughtered our army in war.

“The Ashmeres made you hang your armor, little brother,” he said quietly. “Yet you love one of them and want her at any cost. Won’t you regret it?”

“Instead of victory, you chose to forgive the Ashmeres too and you returned home a warlord who left the battlefield unfinished. Did you regret it?”

Hades swallowed hard. That war five years ago had carved a wound that would never heal in both of us. His

“Apex.” He called me by name, and I knew what came next was serious. “I didn’t retire because I left the battlefield unfinished. I hung my armor forever because I was betrayed in that war, just like the Ashmeres. The battle was nothing but a trap, meant to make the Abyss and Ashmeres slaughter one another. And before you leave this realm, I have something for you. It will help you understand why that war was even issued in the first place.”
