Exhaustion like never before descended on me, and I felt as though I might pass out again. I tried to lift a finger, but strength denied me. All I could do was look up at the roof above.

I turned my head slowly and saw Moon packing a saddlebag. My throat tightened at the look in his eyes.

We were in an inn. A single room with a single bed, and I lay upon it.

“Moon?” I called his name quietly, and he turned at once. When he saw me, his eyes went wide.

“Zephyr.” He rushed to the bed, kneeling to take my hand, pressing his palm against my temple. “My gods, you look so pale. You passed out last night. Listen very carefully. I’ve packed our things and readied the horses. We’ll leave for Ash Pack today, after you’ve had breakfast. It’s a two–day journey, but we’ll make it.”

His words came and went, faint as echoes. I blinked, trying to move, but a harsh cough forced me back against the pillow.

“Zephyr, please. Just lay down. You’re so ill.” His concern rang deep, and I let out a shaky sigh.

“I can’t, Moon. I… I need to find my brother.”

“Zephyr,” he said softly, his hold on me turning tender. “You’ll find your brother, no matter what but not in this state. You’re dying. We need to get you home. And besides, the mirror–monger gave you nothing but an old mirror and…”

“No.” I cut him off, my voice weak but firm. “That mirror, Moon. Where is it?”

Silence fell, and dread gnawed at me. My heart ached. Was it… what…

“You fell last night, Zephyr. The mirror shattered when you dropped it.”

A cold chill shot down my spine. I sat up sharply, my body shuddering in agony.

“The mirror, Moon. Please tell me it hasn’t broken.”

He looked at me as though I were delusional and gently took my hand.

“Zephyr… please, lie back down and…”

“The mirror–monger helped me last night, Moon. He said my father once helped him, and in return he’d repay the debt. That mirror… it was a relic. A powerful relic. I saw Varyn, he’s captive. And… wait. The peddler. We need to find the peddler who frequents Nightine town and…”

“Zephyr!” he snapped, and I froze in silence. His jaw tightened for a long time before he bent, laying his head on my thigh like a man pleading. “Zephyr, please come to your senses. What you saw isn’t real. The mirror… everything… we need to go home. You’re running out of time,”

Moon lifted his head to look at me, and my heart sank. He didn’t believe me. That tore something inside me wide open.

“Zephyr, I didn’t mean to snap. I was only concerned and…”

“It’s fine.” My tone was sincere. “I’m not angry. I’m grateful you’re here. How would I have survived last night without you?”

“Zephyr…”

I closed the distance and took his hand gently.

“I’ll journey to the Lycan Kingdom, while you return home. You’re right. I need a healer, and Princess Mearez is the best. Besides, no one will believe a story about a world inside a mirror except someone who’s half–mad. But I have someone who will. It’s time I tell my love. Couples help each other. They trust each other. They believe without hesitation. You… you are my comrade, my brother–in–arms. You protect me by setting limits. But my Lycan? He’ll burn the whole world to keep me safe. Let’s go. We’re running out of

time.”

I released his hand, strode outside, mounted my horse with practiced ease, and galloped away.
