I kissed him because he deserved it. He deserved more for making me feel better. When I pulled back, I searched his eyes before slipping off his lap.

I walked toward the dresses on the rack and picked one to wear.

“What are you doing?” His voice came low.

“Dressing up.”

“You’re leaving tonight? It’s late.”

I paused and turned to him. His eyes glowed pale gold this time, burning with lust. Hunger. Slowly, he rose from his chair, and without looking away, he pulled the dress from my hands and kissed my lips

instead.

“I’m not letting you travel back alone at this hour,” he murmured against my mouth, and I swallowed hard.

“I’ve traveled at night before.”

“It’s different now. You’re a traitor in their eyes, and until you clear your name and your family’s, you must be careful.”

Goosebumps shivered along my skin at the truth in his words, and I sighed shakily.

I hadn’t thought that far ahead, but now I understood.

“Escort me to White Pack. I’ll pass the night there,” I said at last. “Dessyn is still shaken by Varyn’s imprisonment.”

“Why?”

I nodded.

“Because Varyn is her man. They had just begun courtship before he left for war.”

He didn’t answer, only gave a slight nod and stepped back, handing me the dress. I watched as Lycannar strode toward the table, pouring himself a potion and drinking it. Then he gathered his hair into a tight knot, the motion stealing my breath.

“You came in your carriage?” he asked.

I shook my head.

“I walked here,”

He arched a brow.

“With blood on you?”

“I wasn’t thinking straight. All I wanted after that noon was… you. I didn’t even know how I ended up here.” He searched my eyes silently, then walked back to kiss me again, slow but absolute.

“You did well spilling blood,” he said against my lips. “Smart, not killing him yet. If he survived losing that arm, he’ll wish he hadn’t. I would’ve slit his throat in your place.”

He kissed me once more, eyes fierce, and pulled back.

“Go on. Dress.”

He leaned on the table while I dressed beneath his gaze. He didn’t look away, not once, and I could feel the weight of his obsession. It was still there. Still real.

I almost smiled until Kaela’s face flashed in my mind, and I swallowed down my rage. Kaela Yadev. I would make her pay. I would make her bleed.

But wait… if Varyn had been freed by demons and seen on his way home, then how had he ended up in Blackwater? How had he become a slave?

I let Lycannar help me down from his horse, and I stood at the usual spot where we used to meet when our love was still new.

Strange. Thinking of it now, it still felt new. Fresh. Only now, thickened by lust.

“Go in,” he said at last, his eyes fixed on mine as he clasped my hand.

“Thank you,” I murmured softly and turned toward White Pack. But before I could step away, he caught my wrist, pulling me back gently.

There was urgency in his face now, his gaze hard.

“You’ll tell me before you make another move. I won’t lose you to war. Or anything. Promise me.”

My heart swelled at his words, and I nodded. Of course, I would let him know.

I leaned closer to kiss his lips, then pressed a soft kiss to his cheek in gratitude.

Without another word, I turned and walked into White Pack, pushing open the door to the Dusk household. Only after I was inside did I hear him mount his horse and gallop away.

A sigh escaped me at his departure, and I straightened, facing the eyes upon me. Everyone in the Dusk household was there. Alpha Auedric too. I already knew they’d want answers.

“How did this happen?” Auedric demanded. “Zephyr, make me understand. How are you clashing with the Imperium Council? Don’t you know they are…”

“The same ones who sent Ashmere to war. The ones who struck their own bargain with demons.”

He froze at my words. Exhaustion weighed me down as I collapsed into a chair.

“I should’ve killed Railan, just as Lycannar suggested.”

The murmurs that followed made everyone glance at each other. Dessyn stepped forward.

“Whatever you want to do, Zephyr, whatever we must do has to be done before seven days. Once they strip you of Alpha, we’ll lose everything.”

“So you think after seven days, I’ll just allow anyone outside Ashmere blood to rule my people?”

“To me, you’ll have no choice,” Nathan cut in. “Tonight at the tavern, word spread. Anyone siding with an Ashmere will be branded a traitor too. Your friend is right. You must act before seven days. Otherwise, you’ll lose not only your pack. You’ll lose your name, your legacy, everything your family bled for.”

Silence descended, cutting deep into me until my chest ached. I nearly doubled over with it.

“Then we go to war,” I said at last, my voice low, dangerous. “That’s what Ashmeres do best. Spill blood for justice.”
