The carriage wheels rolled to a stop in the courtyard, but Lycannar’s horse galloped straight into the royal stable.

For heart–stopping seconds, I thought about what would have happened between Nyroth and me if Lycannar hadn’t come in time.

We would have kissed. We would have made love. My gods.

“Let’s get inside now,” Dessyn’s voice came from beside me, pulling me out of my thoughts. I turned to her. “You’re safe now. Let’s go in. Though…” She sighed softly. “I can tell Apex is furious.”

Her last words clenched my heart. I stepped down under the rain and hurried into the hallway.

By the time I entered the dining hall, Lycannar was walking in from the other side. His sisters were there, and his elder brother too, waiting.

The moment I saw them, I rushed into his sisters‘ arms.

“Are you okay?” Princess Mearez asked immediately.

I nodded, pulling back with a shaky sigh.

“I was lost… but I’m fine now.” I muttered the words, assuring myself as much as her.

Princess Seena pulled me into another hug.

“My gods. When I heard, I couldn’t even wrap my head around it.” She pulled back to search my eyes. “But doesn’t an Ashmere resist spells naturally?”

I smiled weakly.

“We’re only good at wars,” I answered quietly.

At that moment, Lycannar entered, bypassing everyone in silence as he headed for his tower. My stomach dropped. I knew I was in for a scolding.

I turned to see Luna Tahlia walking in. I reached for her hand, and she searched my eyes, then smiled knowingly.

“This is you. Truly.”

I looked at Dessyn, who gave me a small nod.

“I’ll stay with the princesses. You should go.”

I swallowed hard and turned toward the black tower that suddenly felt more menacing than ever. What would I find there?

Carefully, I took the stairs after bidding everyone good night. The hallway was silent except for the trail of water leading into the living room.

Quietly, I followed it and reached Lycannar’s chamber doorway. He stood there, peeling off his wet clothes. My heart clenched at the sight.

I swallowed and stepped inside, stopping a few steps away as I watched him pull off his shirt. He slid the forearm braces from his wrists, then kicked off his boots.

“Lycan?” I finally called.

He paused, turning to me, his gaze settling heavy and silent.

“Lycan, I’m sorry. I know I was supposed to be careful, and…”

“I will kill him.” His voice cut sharp, as if carved in stone. My breath caught. He wasn’t joking. I saw it in his eyes. “I’ll kill him the next time he dares lay hands on you. I swear it.”

I bit my lower lip at the vow in his voice. He wasn’t threatening. He was promising.

He reached for a towel to dry his hair, but I couldn’t bear his silence anymore. I closed the distance and threw myself into his arms.

“I’m sorry… sorry I dared forget you, even for a moment.” My gaze searched his, pleading. “The necklace you gave me…”

“He destroyed it,” Lycannar muttered, his eyes dark. “I can feel it.”

“Can’t you make another one?”

He shook his head, leaning close until his breath brushed over my lips.

“Such an amulet is made once in a lifetime. It can’t be remade.”

My heart ached at his words, but when his lips brushed mine, sorrow melted away. I kissed him back, surrendering to the arms of the one I truly belonged to.
