The sunlight came shining down on my face, and I stirred before fluttering my eyes open. slowly to see I was in an unfamiliar bedchamber, dressed only in my trousers.

I paused right there, trying to remember what had happened, and why I was sleeping in another chamber instead of the one in my tower.

You should calm down, Uncle Dareth! The King will attend to all issues immediately he wakes up from his slumber! The sharp snap came from outside, and I instantly recognized my sister Serena’s angry voice.

Oh please, Princess. My uncle’s voice followed immediately after, thick with disdain. He has never been active as a King. Not once! And now, because of him, hundreds of Lycans are dead, and what does he do? Sleep while we all rot here? Our crops and supplies are drained. Even the rain refuses to fall. The Lycan Kingdom is becoming just like him. We are cursed!

You should mind your words, Uncle Dareth.Mearez’s voice cut in now, cool but firm. No matter what, Lycannar is the King, and

you will respect him.

Respect him as a King? Of course. But only if he did his job well. He hasn’t. The people have been loyal to him, and what does he give them in return? Implication and death.”

I swallowed hard where I lay. Forcing myself against the pain and exhaustion, and against all the emotions tearing at me, I pushed out of bed. Barefoot, I made my way through the hall, following the sound of their voices.

Lycannar never implicated anyone,Serena was saying when my uncle cut her off.

Then you must be blind, not to have seen the tower crash down on the people

You dare

Serena.” My voice cut through, and at once the atmosphere shifted.

In the open space used for official eetings, the elders were gathered, my two sisters present as well.

Chantel stood silently to the side, clearly waiting for the right time to act if anyone dared foul play. My Beta, Baron, was there, and so was my uncle Dareth, who seemed determined to give my sisters a hard time.

I stood there, letting them all take in my presence. Their eyes, their awe. Then Uncle Dareth scoffed, lifting his chin.

Thank the gods he finally woke up. Now, Your Majesty, have you come to attend to the kingdom’s affairs?

Keep the sarcasm to yourself, Uncle Dareth,” I told him, walking further in and pulling Serena, still glaring, away from him. And you will learn how to speak to my sisters.

His eyes flashed at that, his voice clipped as he spat to my cars alone quietly,

They are not even a Blood. Why should I respect them?

Because they are the Queen’s daughters, and the King’s sisters. Their mother still wears the crown as Queen in this kingdom, if perhaps your memory fails you. I understand old age does that.”

His jaw tightened as he stepped back, murmuring his hatred openly now.

So how will you attend to the kingdom’s affairs, then? No rains, our crops are dying. There is famine, and the medical supplies used to treat the injured are running out, all thanks to you.

My brother didn’t

Serena.I silenced her again. This time she turned to me, eyes simmering, but then looked away in displeasure.

I sighed, fighting to keep myself steady. I didn’t feel well. Not at all.

I turned toward the table piled high with reports and made to reach for them, but I couldn’t. Something inside me had changed, weakening me beyond reason.

I sat down in the chair, struggling to focus. I reached for the first report, but dizziness overwhelmed me.

My head lowered as I tried to steady myself, and I felt the gentle touch of Mearez’s hand on my arm. I tried harder, but the more effort I gave, the more futile it became.

I will review the reports myself,I finally murmured, lifting my gaze toward them all. I will make the delivery tonight or tomorrow.

At that, my uncle Dareth wasted no time.

Maybe you should give the task to someone more capable, while you sit on the throne that will kill them. Wouldn’t that be better?

I sat in silence for a long moment before slowly lifting my gaze to him. All I saw in his eyes was hatred. It stung to know I was nothing but an obstacle to him.

If I hadn’t been born, his family, be him or one of the sons, would have claimed the throne after my father’s death.

I am not in the mood to argue today, Uncle Dareth,I said quietly.

He gave a curt bow,

As you wish. But know this. One hundred and eight deaths have been reported from the tower’s collapse, and two hundred are injured. The kingdom is starving. All thanks to your reign.

With that, he straightened and walked out. The elders followed close behind, as though they stood with him.

Baron lingered a moment longer, glancing at me.

You okay, Apex?

I looked up at him slowly. For a moment, I felt the weight of truth pressing at my lips. But no. I couldn’t. I had to remain unreadable, mysterious. It was my only safety.

I dropped my gaze without answering, and he understood, bowing and taking his leave.

At last, the space was quiet again, with only my sisters and Chantel remaining. Peace finally touched me, even if only faintly.

My sisters rushed to me at once. They had kept silent until now, restrained by the the others.
