I never thought I’d be returning here so soon, but when the gates of the Ash Pack swung open for me, I couldn’t help but sigh, my shoulders sagging under the weight of it all.
Word of the war had shaken the very roots of the Shifter Empire, and the sights we’d witnessed had stolen our breath away.
We should’ve seen it coming from miles away, Zeph standing with Apex no matter what.
I’d noticed her wild, unshakable devotion to him since the first day she stepped into the Lycan Kingdom and he looked at her as though the rest of the world didn’t exist.
Now here I am, in the den of an angry wolf, Varyn Ashmere, come to demand back my foolish sister, who vanished after leaving a letter saying she’d relocated to the Ash Pack to meet her beloved Varyn.
I know better. The war strategist is toying with her head. He wants one thing, to make her life miserable, just as I made his, and from the looks of it, he’s succeeding.
My mother had been pale and trembling when she ordered me to bring Olivia home.
So here I am, back in this cursed place, and I can already imagine Varyn’s foul mood after losing miserably to his sister, the one who brought no army but a fire–breathing dragon.
My carriage stopped in the courtyard, and I stepped down quietly. I’d barely taken a few steps toward the guard when I was shoved aside by an enraged man storming toward the meeting hall.
Startled, I looked up and froze. It was Lord Osmir, one of the council members. For a moment, I frowned in confusion… until I remembered. His son, Railan, had been killed by Zephyrine.
Oh. That explained the fury in his eyes.
Curiosity got the better of me. Forgetting my original purpose, I followed him into the meeting hall just in time to see Lord Osmir grab Varyn by the collar.
“You dare send my son to war and have him killed? You murderer…”
Before he could finish, Varyn snapped. With a violent shove, he sent the man sprawling to the ground.

“Did I drag your one handed son to the battlefield with my own hands?” Varyn’s voice started low, trembling with fury before rising to a roar. “Didn’t he insist on going? Did I ever force him?!”
The last question was followed by madness. In one swift motion, Varyn drew a knife from his boot and stabbed Lord Osmir, again and again, until the man’s gurgled breaths faded into
silence.
I stood frozen, staring at the lifeless body, my heart hammering painfully. When Varyn finally straightened, blood slick on his palms, I felt a cold chill crawl down my spine.
The gods help us. Varyn is on the edge of madness.
He paced for a moment, then stopped abruptly, turning toward me.
“I… I’m here for my sister,” I managed to say cautiously.
Varyn regarded me silently before nodding to a nearby guard. Moments later, footsteps echoed through the hall, and Olivia appeared.
She froze when she saw me, then her gaze dropped to Lord Osmir’s body. I waited for fear or disgust to twist her expression, for her to see the monster before her. That Varyn is someone she can’t get involved with.
But instead, she rushed forward to take his bloodied hand.
“Are you hurt? Is that your blood?”
My knees nearly buckled. What in the gods‘ names was happening? What had Varyn done to my sister?
Varyn’s eyes were distant, his mind still somewhere in the battlefield. Then he looked at me, almost defiantly, before turning back to her.
Gently, he cupped her cheek, brushing her skin with a tenderness that made bile rise in my throat. He leaned forward and kissed her lips softly.
“You should go home with your brother,” he murmured.
Olivia frowned, confused.
“What are you talking about? You said we were getting married.”
Married?!

Varyn’s hand fell to his side. His jaw tightened.
“You should go home. All I said were lies. I already have a woman.”
