Zephyrine

The mixed surge of energy and auras forced my eyelids open. For a moment, I lay there, wondering how I ended up in bed. Then a soft shriek from my spirit guard snapped away the last trace of slumber.
I sat up sharply, only to collapse back against the pillow, breathless. It was night, yet strangely bright. I tried again.
Rising carefully, I moved toward the corridor and paused there. The first thing that caught my eyes were the demons gathered in the courtyard, gazing at Le Fey, which still shimmered faintly in the courtyard, a living testament to the Moon Goddess’s power over me.
They marveled at it from a distance, and that made me smile softly. Smart people.
I turned to leave, but then froze. The reason for the brightness caught my eyes.
Full moon.
Wait, did that mean I’d been asleep from last night until now?
And hell, that could only mean one thing.
Lycannar.
He always lost control under the full moon, shifting into his beast form, untamed and dangerous.
Panic set in. I rushed back to the bedchamber, glancing at his side of the bed, empty. My throat tightened.
I hurried toward the exit, descending the stairs two at a time, only to run into the princesses coming from the hall.
“Zephyrine…” Serena called, but I didn’t slow.
“I need to see Lycannar. Is he alright?” I demanded, reaching the steel chamber first door where Chantel stood guard as always, as he had done every full moon for years.
“Move aside. I need to see him.”
He didn’t speak, not a word, just stared at me in that unsettling silence that made me bite my

“I only want to see him,” I murmured, exhausted, glancing at the princesses. “Even in his true form, Lycannar won’t hurt me. Let me in.”
“He hurt me once in that state,” Princess Serena said softly, her tone both warning and pleading. “And you know how much my baby brother loves me. Let him be till tomorrow. He’ll return to himself soon.”
“But…”
“Let him be.”
The voice came from the shadows, firm and resonant. I turned at once. Hades stood there in black, his aura steady and heavy with quiet command, the next ruler rising from darkness.
“Let him be,” he repeated.
Something inside me wilted. Their words, their tone, it made me feel… distant, like an intruder in a place I once called home. Perhaps they hated me for my brother’s deeds.
Without replying, I turned toward the black tower again, but Hades’s voice stopped me.
“The maid will serve dinner. Join us,” he said evenly. “We should celebrate the life growing within you, my niece or nephew.”
My skin prickled at that. I turned to Princess Mearez, who nodded, confirmation that she’d told them. They knew.
Serena stepped forward, her eyes warm. She pulled me into a hug.
“Come,” she whispered. “Let’s eat and talk.”
This time, I didn’t protest. She led me to the dining hall where Blue was serving.
Luna Thalia poured the drinks, cheerful, too cheerful. I raised an eyebrow. So Hades had claimed her at last. Even amid chaos, love bloomed.
Princess Serena pulled a chair for me.
“Sit. You look perfect.”
“I should wash up,” I murmured. “I just woke.”
“It’s not morning,” she teased. “Sit.”

The aroma of food melted my resistance. I sat. Across from me, Hades’s gaze was fixed on my face, steady, assessing.
I looked up, meeting his eyes. Luna Thalia sat beside Serena, and across from us were Mearez and Hades, Young Black asleep in his arms.
“You look exactly like your mother,” Hades said at last, his tone quiet but edged with something sharp. “A warrior I respected. We once called a truce, but your brother turned it into a trap. I should’ve let my little brother end him when he was at your people’s mercy.”
“Brother Hades…” Mearez began softly, but he continued.
“You’re nothing like him,” he said firmly. “And I love you for that. For my brother’s sake, and for everything you’ve done for us.”
I bit my lip at the sincerity in his words. Still looking at me, he reached across the table, covering my hand with his, his touch unexpectedly gentle.
“Congratulations,” he said. “Mother believes you’ll be the next Queen. Tedious role, if you ask
me.”
“You’ve never been a queen,” I teased quietly. “How would you know?”
He smiled faintly.
“My true mother was one. I saw how it weighed her down.”
“Maybe it wasn’t the crown that weighed her down,” I murmured. “Maybe it was the king.”
