Are you sure she’s inside?”

“Well, Kai said my brother brought her home yesterday”

The door creaked open, revealing Pamela with Olivia right beside her.

I was still curled on my bed, knees drawn tight to my chest, chin resting on them. I hadn’t moved since yesterday. Not since Nyroth slammed my chamber door behind him and left.

I refused to think about it, not because it didn’t hurt, but because I didn’t want to owe Nyroth Hue a single thing. All I wanted was to be free of the mate bond

“She must still be shaken, knowing the rogues are looking for her, 1 heard Olivia whisper to her mother. I ignored them. My mind drifted instead to Lycantar. He hadn’t shown up, Maybe he’d forgotten me. Maybe he was never coming.

I swallowed, forcing my thoughts toward Luna Tahlin. With the accusations against her, she must be breaking. I needed to help her clear her name because I was guilty, too.

If only Lyannar would come and confess. But…

A sound broke through my thoughts. My head jerked up, ears straining. I shot off the bed and made for the window only for Olivia to shove me aside and peer out first.

My jaw tightened at her rudeness, but then I saw her face go pale. Her eyes widened.

“Is that my goodness, Mother, is that the Lycan Princess?”

The words froze me. I shoved her back to see for myself.

The sight made goosebumps ripple over my skin. A royal carriage had stopped in the courtyard. Princess Mearez stepped down, flawless grace, flanked by two maids and two guards. Her eyes swept the area until they landed on me through the window.

The courtyard fell silent. Few had ever seen a Lycan royal in person. All around, pack members stared in reverent awe.

Kai, Hue Pack’s beta, rushed forward. He spoke briefly with her before leading her inside.

“Maybe she’s here to punish the one dragging the Blood family name through the mud,” Olivia muttered spitefully. “Mother- let’s go meet her!”

They left in a flurry. I stayed at the window for a moment, heart pounding. Why is the Princess here?

I turned abruptly and marched to the living room, arriving just in time to see Princess Mearez enter.

The room went still. Nyroth appeared with Kaela beside him.

Kaela was the first to move, rushing forward with a bright, eager smile.

“Princess Mearez, you must be here because of the disgrace to your family’s name and..”

Mearez walked right past her and pulled me into her arms,

“My goodness, Zephyrine,” she murmured, looking me over as if searching for wounds, “Are you hurt anywhere? Any bruises?

The protective hold startled me as much as her relief. I shook my head.

“I’m fine.”

“You don’t have to feel responsible. I’m fine,” Frut in, my tone sharper than I intended.

“My life isn’t the only one on the line,” I told her once we were alone. “The Alpha Lycannar killed, his death was pinned on his wife. The council will judge her soon and…”

*1 heard on the way here that they passed judgment quickly and now made to crown a new Alpha.”

I turned away, swallowing the knot of rage and sorrow. If Lycannar had shown up sooner, none of this would’ve happened.

Mearez reached for my shoulder.

“You have nothing to worry about. The hearing for you is this afternoon, but I’ll speak to the Alpha here. We can postpone until tomorrow. Lycannar will have time to..”

“I don’t need him anymore,” I said coldly, meeting her gaze. “Whatever’s keeping him busy, he should stay with it. Tell him not to show his face to me again.”

Her face drained of color. She knew exactly what her brother would do when he heard that.

“Zephyrine, you need to calm down. My brother didn’t…”

“He erased his mark from me.” My voice broke, but I pushed on. “If he wasn’t done with me, why would he do that? Why wouldn’t he come the second he learned I was taken here? Why wouldn’t he interrupt the council when an innocent woman was being framed for his deed? Why?”

Mearez had no answer and I didn’t want one.

I looked away, and she patted my back gently before standing. Without another word, she left, closing the door softly behind
