I stare at the piece of paper, and for a moment, I forget to breathe. For real she is truly going to a duel tonight, and not just with anyone, but with a savage rogue who wants her dead more than anyone else.
Word has already spread through the empire, and it has reached my ears that she’s now being declared as the Lycan King’s woman. But I dare to disagree.
Zeph is mine.
I brought her here. I sheltered her. I fed her until now. She is my mate and no man else’s.
The urge hits me hard. I have to see her one more time. This time, to make her stop this duel.
I leave my chamber, heading for the living room where my mother and younger sister are huddled, staring at the same printed announcement that has been sent to every pack.
“She’s really dying tonight. Mother, we must go and see how she’s dealt with,” my younger sister says. My mother only chuckles to back her up.
“I have to go. I heard she stood against Kaela. Who in her right mind would do that?”
They both pause when they notice me, but by then, anger is already flooding through me. I glare at Olivia, and she pulls back, startled.
“Are you going to the duel tonight to…” she starts, but I cut her off.
“I thought you had to apply for entry at the healer’s home. Why didn’t you?” I snap. She jolts back in fear.
My mother stands between us quickly.
“Is everything okay, son? Why are you so harsh?”
“Harsh? Why shouldn’t I be harsh? I’m asking her a question. While everyone her age is out looking for something useful to do, why is she still here at home, roaming around? Huh?”
Olivia takes another step back and pouts, which only infuriates me further.
“Try being lazy or stupid one more time, and you’ll be locked in your room for weeks.”
Before my mother can say anything else, I’ve already left. I head straight for my horse, mount up, and ride into White Pack territory.
It doesn’t take long before my horse strides into the pack’s grounds. I dismount and see a crowd gathered outside the Dusk household. Raising a brow, I head in that direction, but Alpha Auedric spots me from his garden and comes over, smiling.
“Ah, you’re here, Alpha Nyroth. You must have heard about it, that’s why you came, right?”
I frown, not following.

“About what? The duel?”
“Oh, so you came for the duel? I thought it was about the first–ever Lycan to come live in a werewolf pack.”
“What are you talking about?” My voice drops.
“The Lycan King did the best for Zephyr. He gifted her a personal maid from his kingdom. A smart, sweet lady, if you ask me. Not only that. You see the crowd over there?” He points. “They’re fawning over the horse and carriage the Lycan King gave her. She is officially his woman now. The word is already out there.”
I didn’t even realize I was already seething in anger. Before I can reply, Alpha Auedric’s beta calls him away, leaving me alone with my thoughts as he excused himself.
My gaze shifts to the crowd. The thought of Apex gifting my mate something I never thought to give her `makes me burn with jealousy. Who sent him on such an errand?
I march toward the Dusk household’s door and knock, my fist tight. The crowd starts to disperse when they notice me.
A young, beautiful woman opens the door. The energy coming off her doesn’t match that of a werewolf. Definitely, she must be the Lycan Apex sent.
“Why are you here, Kaela?” I demand.
She grins.
“I came to deliver my father’s ascension invitation to Alpha Auedric. Because your stupid mate will fail tonight, and we will win the duel.” She turns to Zeph with a glare. Then, just to provoke her, she steps toward me, placing a hand on my chest.
“You’ll come to the coronation, won’t you? Maybe you should come early. I got a new nightdress, and I want you to be the first to see me in it. We can… you can also suck me just like you used to, before the party
starts.”
The offer sends a rush of heat through me, and I lower my gaze, unable to say no. I’d be insane to turn that down.
“Alright,” I say, knowing Zeph heard every word.
Kaela smirks at her.
“Loser. You’ll lose tonight just like you lost your mate to me.”
Silence fell. I expect Zeph to walk away like before, but instead, her lips curve into a slow smile.
“How am I a loser when I’ve bagged myself a king?”
Kaela stiffens at the challenge and steps forward.
“Your mate came between my legs once, and the next day he forgot about you his fated mate.”
“And it took a king just one look before he get obsessed with me,” Zeph counters softly, stepping closer to whisper in Kaela’s ear, “He’s been fucking you for free all this time, and he’s kept it secret, never publicly acknowledging you. Mine only laid with me once, and he’s already calling me a queen.”
She pulls back with a light chuckle,
“Loser? Between a king and an Alpha, no, between Nyroth Hue and Lycannar Blood who would you even choose? Cheap slut.”
