“So we believe making your cousins compete will be better. One of them who wins will be crowned as the beta. What do you think, Your Majesty?”

Silence. I stood there with Princess Mearez, my breath caught in my throat as I watched him consider the

decision.

“Let other men compete too,” Lycannar said quietly, his gaze downcast. The elders shared a look with Lord Dareth.

“I don’t think that is a good option. You mean to let a peasant rule by your side?” His uncle asked sharply, and suddenly time seemed to pause.

Lycannar, still staring at the table, slowly lifted his eyes to meet his uncle’s. My breath hitched. He would have seen something, horrible things, like his death.

The fact that he held eye contact forced the whole hall into strict decorum. Then he turned toward the elders, giving each one a piercing look. It wasn’t merely a stare; it was a warning. Chantel stood ready, willing to spill blood at his command.

“Have the people you call peasants compete too. Whoever wins will take the vow with me as my beta,” he concluded. Now I knew that anyone who spoke against it wouldn’t live to see tomorrow.

The elders nodded their agreement wisely, and I sighed in relief. Just then, Lord Dareth turned toward the exit and spotted me. Gently, he turned back to Lycannar, whose eyes had returned to the long table.

“Your Majesty, we have discussed among ourselves as a council as well. A king without a wife or concubine, at least… perhaps you would prefer one to warm your bed tonight?“.

I swallowed hard at the suggestion, and I swear I already felt my face flush with rage. I stood with bated breath, waiting for Lycannar’s response,

He finally looked up at his uncle, who immediately bowed. The King’s gaze lingered briefly on me near the exit. He knew I was there but he chose to ignore me.

My heart skipped a beat when he looked away. His expression was unreadable.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were suffering from forgetfulness? I would have told my sister to heal you,” he said quietly. “I introduced my woman to you the other night. Have you forgotten so quickly?”

Silence descended over the hall, and I paused to let his words echo in my mind. He had… taken my side.

Lord Dareth turned to the elders and chuckled dryly to ease the tension.

“You won’t blame old age, my dear nephew. We will prepare the competition at once and report back on who wins. How about that?”

Lycannar nodded, and the meeting was dismissed instantly. The elders took their leave, bypassing Princess Mearez and me with a low bow. I felt their eyes linger on me before they finally departed.

At last, Princess Mearez pulled me aside in the council chamber and began talking about her problem, but I stayed in the doorway, watching him.

“Your first meeting as a king and you’re already threatening the elders with a glare, Lycan,” she said, smiling and He shrugged. “Come take your potion. How do you feel?”

Lycannar grabbed the goblet of potion his sister had poured and drank it in one gulp.

“I’m fine.”

“As you should be. I have to go. I’ll leave Zephyrine to you. Don’t you see she is strong? She’s healed already.”

At that, Lycannar gave no response. Princess Mearez sensed something immediately and took the goblet away, heading out. As she passed me, she whispered,

“You won’t even dare share that body of yours with anyone, Lycannar,” I warned hotly. He matched my

gaze.

“Same goes

for you. If you want that mate of yours to keep his hands intact, tell him to stop touching my woman. I am not merciful, Zephyrine. I will end him if I see him lay hands on you again.”

He meant it. For a moment, I wondered how far he’d go, how many would have to die before Lycannar claimed me, whole and soul.

I swallowed hard at the thought of his concubine remark and gently stepped closer, placing my palm flat on his chest. The warmth, the solidness, the thudding of his heartbeat… it made me feel whole.

“I can use a blade too, Lycan,” I whispered, looking into his eyes, my lips brushing his. “Aside from your sister, whom I love, respect, and understand, these lips, this body, you, the King of the Lycan Kingdom, you are mine. Any woman who comes near you will be lost without a trace. If you doubt me, then try.”

A spark of threat passed between us, and the air grew heavy. His lips hovered near mine for a brief moment before everything crashed. In the next second, I found myself lifted into his arms, my hands circling his neck. He pinned me against the wall and kissed me hard, fiercely, as if claiming me entirely.
