“Does she have a fiancé yet? You know, once a woman’s past thirty, it gets a lot harder to find someone.”
Lester shot Naomi a long, searching look. For the first time, he found her a bit narrow-minded.
Thirty? Lester thought. Even at forty, a woman like Tracy could have her pick of men—what was Naomi worried about?
“I have no idea. I don’t pry into her private life,” he replied, his tone even.
“That’s not like you. She’s your cousin, isn’t she? How can you not care about her?” Naomi’s words carried a subtle reminder—they were, officially, cousins. There were boundaries they couldn’t cross.
Feeling drained, Lester rubbed his temples and exhaled slowly. “Naomi, I’m exhausted. I need to get some rest. Let’s talk another time.”
This time, he didn’t wait for a reply. He turned and strode off, leaving Naomi standing there.
Naomi stamped her foot in frustration but didn’t chase after him. She could see Lester’s patience with her was waning. If she kept pushing, things would only get worse between them.
After a moment’s hesitation, she turned and headed back to Joseph’s hospital room.
When Joseph saw her come in, a spark lit his eyes. He tried to sit up straighter, but his injuries pulled at him, pain radiating through his body as the painkillers began to wear off. He was only managing to hold it together by sheer willpower.
“Naomi, why didn’t you leave with Lester?”
Naomi pulled up a chair and sat down, letting out a dramatic sigh. “Lester’s jealous again. He’s convinced there’s something going on between us, and I don’t even know how to explain it to him anymore.”
“How could he think that?” Joseph protested, indignant on her behalf. “He knows you’re not that kind of person. And I’d never betray a friend like that, either.” His jaw tightened with righteous anger. “I’ll message Lester and clear things up. He can misunderstand me all he wants, but there’s no excuse for doubting you.”
“Let it go, Joseph. The more you explain, the more he’ll twist it in his mind. I’m used to it by now.” Naomi shrugged, forcing a smile. “Besides, Lester’s got other women around him these days. It really doesn’t matter if I’m there or not.”
