The coastal guns along the Academy’s main island erupted. It was the start of a suicide assault.

“I’m Tessa! Carrying out the kill mission!”

The networked drones that answered to Tessa dove forward one after another, exploding against the island. Each drone that detonated bought a little time for the next wave to surge ahead. The firestorm hammered straight into the Academy’s anti–missile shield.

Rumble… Boom!

The island’s tight defenses were torn open by wave after wave of suicide attacks.

Once the Divine Academy’s defenses weakened, scores of fighters roared into the sky. The jets Theresa had seized from the three Ark Camps screamed over the island, and their bombs fell without mercy.

These people had tried to bomb Theresa’s base the day before–now she returned the favor.

After the barrage, Theresa’s warship slipped into the harbor. She disembarked with a battalion of fully armed fighters, shoulder–carried missiles, and carbines at the ready, and they surged into the island.

“Charge!”

They tore through the island, room to room, leaving no corner unsearched. Kill the unjust. Kill the unkind. Kill those who would not yield. Theresa gave no quarter: kill, kill, kill—her battle cry hollowed the sky.

In the Academy’s command room, a crowd watched in stunned silence as Theresa’s forces flattened the island. The man in charge sat with a strange mix of excitement and caution in his eyes. He had not expected her to be so tough.

“She’s a tough one,” he said quietly, watching the footage of her and her swarm of fearless fighters.

“Not only does she have raw power, but she’s built a force this big behind her. Interesting. Very interesting,” he muttered.

For someone to really storm the Divine Academy with her people—it completely ignited the fire in their eyes.

Standing in the island’s center after they’d taken it, Theresa heard a cold, crackling broadcast over the loudspeakers.

“Congratulations, No. 7913,” the voice intoned. “You have become this season’s new Divine Academy leader. Your performance impressed us. We will reopen talks about your aunt. She is indeed in our custody and is currently safe.

“We propose an exchange: Professor K is trapped in Firestone amid a zombie surge. Rescue him for us, and we will return your

aunt.”

Theresa listened as the message finished. Her eyes cooled. “Why should I believe you?”

“We will dispatch a helicopter to the Academy tomorrow with a single pilot, Professor K’s location, and some supplies. Consider whether you will go.” At that, the line went dead.

“Theresa.”

“Theresa.”

“Theresa.”

People closed in on Theresa.

“You can’t go!”

“It’s a trap!”
