Mia’s POV
“Mind if I steal Mia for a moment?” he asked Thomas. “I need to practice my speech, and she’s always been my best audience.”
“Of course,” Thomas smiled. “Just bring her back before the dancing starts.”
Nate led me to a quieter corner of the ballroom, near the floor–to–ceiling windows that looked out over the gardens.
Las
“Nervous?” I asked, noting the slight tension in his shoulders.
“Terrified,” he admitted with a self–deprecating laugh.
“You’ll be fine,” I assured him. “Just speak from the heart.”
“They really are perfect together.” Nate continued quietly.
There was something wistful in his voice that made my chest tighten. We’d never really talked about his dating life since he’d moved back to N York. I knew he went out occasionally, but nothing serious, nothing that
lasted.
“You’ll find it,” I said gently. “The right person is out there.”
He smiled, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Maybe. Or maybe some of us are meant to be the matchmaker instead of the match.”
Before I could respond to that cryptic comment, the bandleader tapped his microphone.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we’re honored to have the best man, Dr. Nate Pierce, share a few words about our happy couple.”
Nate straightened his tie and gave me a quick smile. “Wish me luck.“/
He made his way to the small stage, accepting the microphone with more confidence than he’d shown moments
before.
“Good evening, everyone,” he began, his voice carrying clearly through the ballroom. “For those who don’t
I’m Nate Pierce, and I have the honor of being Jeo’s best man tonight.”
know me,
When Nate was talking about Jeo and Leila’s love story, laughter bubbled up from the guests. It’s hard to believe that Nate can be funny. But he did it tonight. More laughter, and I could see Jeo grinning from his place at the head table.
Nate paused, his expression growing more serious. The ballroom had grown completely quiet, everyone hanging on his words.
“They say opposites attract, but I think that’s only part of the story. Yes, Jeo is chaos and creativity while Leila is precision and logic. He sees the world in colors and emotions, she sees it in facts and solutions. But what they share is infinitely more important than what makes them different.”

He paused, and I could see him gathering his thoughts.

“They both believe in healing. And they both understand that love isn’t just a feeling–It’s an action, a choice you make every day to put someone else’s wellbeing alongside your own. So….Jeo, you’ve found someone who not only understands your art but challenges you to grow as a person. Leila, you’ve found someone who sees the beauty in your dedication and never makes you choose between love and ambition.”
Nate raised his champagne glass.
“So here’s to Jeo and Leila Martinez–may your love continue to heal not just each other, but everyone lucky enough to witness it. Cheers!”

The ballroom erupted in applause and cheers as everyone raised their glasses. I dabbed at my eyes with my napkin, hoping my mascara hadn’t run.
