Chapter 245 Her Backup
Mia’s POV
“I can be there in twenty minutes,” Victoria said curtly, “I hope you’ve addressed the boys‘ behavior appropriately.”
My jaw clenched. She was already defending Madison before even hearing what happened.
“We’ll discuss everything when you arrive,” Ms. Rodriguez said diplomatically, “Thank you.”
After she hung up, Ms. Rodriguez turned to me. “Now I need to talk to Madison before her mother gets here. But given what the boys have told us…” She hesitated. “Would you mind if I spoke with her alone first? Sometimes children feel more comfortable without other parents present.”
“Actually, I’d prefer to be there,” I said firmly. “This same little girl made false accusations against my boys at a my friend’s wedding last week. I think it’s important that I hear what she says.”
Ms. Rodriguez nodded understanding. “I get it. Let’s keep it low–key though–I don’t want her to feel like she’s
on trial.”
Madison was sitting at the art table drawing when Ms. Rodriguez approached. “Hey Madison, can I talk to you for a minute about what happened during blocks time today?”

The little girl looked up with wide eyes that held a sharpness that seemed beyond her six years.
“Can you tell me what happened when you were playing with Alexander and Ethan?” Ms. Rodriguez asked gently.
The little girl’s face immediately crumpled. “They were so mean to me! They said I was stupid and ugly, and they pushed me when I tried to play with their blocks!”
I bit my tongue to keep from interjecting. The lies came so easily to her.
Ms. Rodriguez was taking notes, but her tone remained gentle. “Madison, I need to ask you about the words that were used today. Did anyone say unkind things?”
“They said…” Madison’s voice got smaller, more pathetic. “They said I dress funny and that my mommy is mean. And when I tried to make friends, Alexander pushed me really hard!”
“Where did he push you?”
Madison pointed vaguely at her shoulder. “Right here. It hurt a lot, but I didn’t want to cry because I wanted to be brave.”
I couldn’t stay quiet anymore. “Madison, that’s not what happened, is it?”
The little girl’s eyes darted to me, and for just a moment, I saw something calculating flash across her features. But then the innocent mask slipped back into place.
“I don’t know what you mean,” she said in a small voice.

“You told Alexander and Ethan that they smell He dogs. You said their clothes look like trash. You told them they don’t have a father so they can’t have Uncle Thomas.” My voice was calm but firm. “Did you say those things?”
Madison’s lower lip began to tremble. “No! I was just trying to be friends! They were mean to me first!”
“Madison,” Ms. Rodriguez said gently, “It’s very important that you tell the truth. No one is going to be in trouble for telling the truth.”
The little girl looked between us, clearly weighing her options. I could practically see the gears turning in her six -year–old head.
“Maybe I said some things,” she admitted finally. “But only because they hurt my feelings first!”
“What things did you say?” the teacher pressed.
Madison fidgeted with her crayon. “I might have said something about them not having a daddy. But that’s true! My mommy told me they don’t have one!”
My hands clenched into fists. Victoria had coached her own daughter with information specifically designed to hurt my boys.
I couldn’t stay quiet anymore. “Madison, did someone at home tell you things about Alexander and Ethan before you came to school today?”
The little girl’s eyes darted to me, and for just a moment, I saw something calculating flash across her features. But then the innocent mask slipped back into place.
Madison’s eyes went wide, like she realized she might have said too much. “I don’t remember.”
Ms. Rodriguez leaned forward, her voice kind but serious. “Madison, did your mom talk to you about these boys and their family before you came to school?”
The little girl’s face flushed red. “She just… she said they might not be very nice because their mommy is trying to steal Uncle Thomas away from our family.”
There it was. Victoria had deliberately planted these ideas in her daughter’s head.
Ms. Rodriguez looked horrified. “Madison, that’s not appropriate conversation for school. Families should not be discussed that way.”
“But it’s true!” Madison protested. “My mommy said-”
Ms. Rodriguez looked troubled by Madison’s admission. “Okay, Madison, I need you to sit in our quiet corner until your mom gets here. This gives you some time to think about what we talked about.”
She guided Madison to a cony area with soft pillows and books–a space designed for children to calm down. when they were overwhelmed.
Ms. Rodriguez came back over to me, shaking her head. “Mia, I have to say, this is really concerning. When kids come to school with this kind of specific information about other families, that’s a red flag for us.” She lowered her voice. “It sounds like Madison was given talking points before she even met your boys.”
