A sharp knock on the classroom door interrupted us. Through the window, I could see Victoria’s perfectly styled blonde hair.

“That’s her,” I said, my stomach tightening.

But as Ms. Rodriguez moved to open the door, I saw a second figure behind Victoria.

Thomas.

My heart sank.

The door opened, and Victoria swept in wearing a cream–colored designer coat that probably cost more than my monthly salary. Her makeup was flawless, her hair perfectly styled, and she radiated the kind of confidence that only comes from serious money and serious entitlement.

Thomas followed behind her, looking uncomfortable in his dark suit. His eyes found mine immediately. His eyes lit up.

I’m furious. Doesn’t he know what Victoria and her daughter did to my sons?

“Where’s my daughter?” Victoria demanded, scanning the room until she spotted Madison sitting sullenly at the art table. “Madison, darling, are you alright?”

Madison jumped up and ran to her mother, launching into what was clearly a well–rehearsed performance.” Mommy! Those boys were so mean to me! They said horrible things and pushed me!”

Victoria gathered her daughter close, shooting me a triumphant look over Madison’s head. “There, there, sweetheart. Mommy’s here now.”

Thomas stepped forward, looking confused. “Mia? What’s going on? Victoria said there was some kind of emergency with the kids?”

“There was an incident between Madison and my boys,” I said carefully, very aware that we had an audience.” We’re trying to sort out what actually happened.”

“From what Madison told me,” Victoria said, her voice dripping with false concern, “your sons have been bullying her. Apparently this isn’t the first time either–Madison mentioned something about them being aggressive at a wedding recently.”

“That’s interesting,” I said, my voice sharp enough to cut glass. “Because I was there at that wedding, and

Madison lied then too.”

Victoria’s eyes flashed with anger, but she kept her voice level. “I hardly think a six–year–old is capable of orchestrating elaborate lies, do you?”

“Actually,” Ms. Rodriguez interjected, “we have security footage of today’s incident. Would you like to review it?

Victoria’s confident expression flickered for just a moment. “Of course. I’m sure it will show exactly what Madison has described.”

Thomas looked between us, clearly trying to plece together what was happening. “Maybe I should take the boys outside while you all sort this out—”

“No,” I said firmly. “Alexander and Ethan have done nothing wrong, and I’m not sending them away like they’re in trouble.”

“Madison,” Victoria said sweetly, “tell Uncle Thomas what those boys did to you.”

Madison looked up at Thomas with wide, tear–filled eyes. “They said mean things about my daddy being dead, and they pushed me when I tried to be friends.”

I watched Thomas’s face carefully. He looked shocked and concerned, but also… skeptical?

“That doesn’t sound like Alexander and Ethan,” he said slowly.

Victoria’s smile tightened. “Children can be quite different when adults aren’t watching, Thomas. Surely your understand that some children aren’t raised with proper discipline.”

The insult was aimed directly at me, and Thomas caught it immediately. His expression hardened.

“What exactly are you implying, Victoria?”

“I’m not implying anything,” she said smoothly. “I’m simply saying that Madison has never had behavioral issues before. Perhaps the problem lies elsewhere.”

“Ms. Rodriguez,” I said, my patience finally snapping, “please show Ms. Whitmore the security footage. Now.” The teacher nodded, turning her laptop screen so Victoria could see. We all watched in silence as the video played, showing Madison clearly instigating the conflict with my boys.

Victoria’s watched her daughter knock over the block tower multiple times and pursue Alexander and Ethan across the room. But she said,

“The audio isn’t clear. Those two boys must have said something to my daughter.”

“Actually,” Ms. Rodriguez interrupted, “I spoke with all three children separately. Madison admitted to making comments about the boys not having a father, among other hurtful remarks.”

“She’s six years old!” Victoria protested. “Children say thoughtless things!”

“Children say what they’ve been taught to say,” I countered. “And according to Madison, you specifically told her that my sons don’t have a father.”

Thomas’s head snapped toward Victoria. “You said what?”

Victoria’s carefully constructed facade was beginning to crack. “I may have mentioned in passing that the situation was complicated-”
