Chapter 248 Behind the Tears
Chapter 248 Behind the Tears
Mia’s POV
Thomas stepped forward as we headed toward the door. “Mia, wait. Let me walk you to your car.”
“Later, Thomas” I said. “we’re not doing this in front of the boys.”
Behind us, I could hear Victoria talking to Madison in hushed tones.
Then I heard Madsion cry out sharply.

“Mia,” he said, slightly out of breath. “I need you to know that Victoria called me in a panic, saying there was an emergency with Madison. I don’t know twins are involved. She made it sound like someone was seriously hurt.”
I kept walking toward the exit, the twins flanking me like tiny bodyguards. “And you didn’t think to call me first?
His steps faltered slightly. “I’m sorry. I thought it would be a good time for the three kids to get to know each other.”
I almost laughed out loud. “They met at Jeo’s wedding. Madsion said the twins hurt her.
Thomas looked very strange. He must have remembered what happened to the twins on the wedding day. But I guess he didn’t believe it was Madison who did it.
We pushed through the glass doors into the late afternoon air. The parking lot was mostly empty now, just a few cars scattered across the asphalt. My practical Honda Pilot looked decidedly unglamorous next to the sleek black Mercedes that I assumed belonged to Victoria.
“Boys, can you put your backpacks in the car while I talk to Uncle Thomas for a minute?” I asked, hitting the unlock button on my key fob.
They nodded solemnly and went about their task with the kind of exaggerated care that told me they were trying very hard to be good after a difficult day.
“Mia, please,” Thomas said once they were out of earshot. “I had no idea about any of this. Victoria made it sound like Madison was the victim of bullying, and you know how I feel about that.”
I studied his face, looking for signs of deception. Thomas had never been a good liar. Right now, he looked genuinely confused and upset.
“So you automatically assumed my four–year–olds were bullies?” I asked.
“No!” he said quickly. “I didn’t assume anything. Alexander and Ethan would never do what Victoria described.”
“But you didn’t say that in there,” I said.
Before he could answer, raised voices echoed from inside the building. Through the glass doors, from my angle, I could see Victoria and Madison in the hallway, and Victoria appeared to be gripping her daughter’s arm tightly.
Too tightly.
Chapter 249 Behind the Tears
“Mommy!” Madison’s voice carried clearly through the glass, high–pitched with distress.
Then, Madison was sobbling, louder.
“Sweetie, what’s wrong?” Ms. Rodriguez asked, immediately crouching down to Madison’s level.
Victoria’s transformation was instant and chilling

“Oh, she’s just overwhelmed by everything that happened today,” Victoria said, her voice dripping with maternal worry. “She gets so upset when children are mean to her. It brings back memories of losing her father.”
Madison looked up at her mother for a moment. Then she said, “I want Uncle Thomas,” Madison whimpered, her small voice breaking my heart despite everything. “Please don’t let him leave, Mommy.”
And there it was, Victoria’s plan in action.
“Thomas,” Victoria called out, somehow managing to make her voice carry just the right note of desperation. Madison is asking for you. Could you please come back inside? Just for a moment?”
Victoria deliberately hurting her own child to create this exact scenario.
The realization made me sick to my stomach.
