The drive home was quiet except for the gentle hum of the car engine and the twinsoccasional whispered conversations in the backseat. I kept checking them in the rearview mirror, watching for signs of lingering upset from their terrible day. But kids are resilient in ways that constantly amaze me. By the time we pulled into our parking garage, they were already debating whether Gas would prefer chicken or beef flavored treats when we got upstairs.

Mama,Ethan said as I helped him out of his car seat, my tummy feels funny.

1 knelt down to his level, studying his pale face. Funny how, sweetheart? Like you’re hungry, or like you might throw up?

Liketwisty,he said, pressing his small hands against his stomach. Like when we went on that spinny ride at the fair.

It’s going to be okay,I murmured, pulling him into a hug. That twisty feeling will go away. It’s just your body telling you that today was hard.

Alexander slipped his hand into mine as we walked toward the elevator. Mama, are we bad kids?

Oh, baby. No. Absolutely not. You are good, kind, wonderful boys. What happened today wasn’t about you being bad. Sometimes other people make choices that have nothing to do with who you really are.

I sighed wearily as the elevator carried us upward. How do you explain to fouryearolds that some adults use children as weapons? That some mothers would actually harm their own children for personal gain?

It reminded me of something I’d read once, a dark interpretation of Snow White. Snow White’s own mother trying to kill her, not a stepmother.

But the truth was, there really were mothers in this world who would sacrifice their children’s wellbeing for their own desires. Victoria Whitmore was apparently one of them.

There are truly many crazy people in this world, I thought as I unlocked our apartment door. Even among the wealthy especially among the wealthythere are those who are completely mad.

Gas greeted us at the door with his usual enthusiasm, tail wagging so hard his entire body wiggled. The twins immediately dropped to the floor to hug him, and I watched some of the tension leave their small shoulders as they buried their faces in his golden fur.

Mom, we’re home!I called out

In the kitchen!she replied. Perfect timingdinner’s almost ready.

The smell of my mother’s cooking filled the apartment. Boys, go wash your hands,I instructed. Then come tell Grandma about your day.

As they scampered off to the bathroom, chattering to each other in that twin language they sometimes slipped into, my mother appeared in the kitchen doorway. She took one look at my face and immediately moved into protective mode.

What happened?she asked quietly.

Drama at preschool. The kind that makes me want to homeschool them until they’re eighteen.

She raised an eyebrow. That bad?

Grandma! GrandmalAlexander launched himself at her legs. We had the worst day ever, but then we came home and Gas was here and now you made dinner and everything’s better!

And my tummy doesn’t feel twisty anymore,Ethan added, his face already brighter.

My mother gathered them both into a hug. Well, it’s a good thing I made extra mashed potatoes then. Nothing fixes a bad day quite like carbs.

Dinner was exactly what we all needed.

Can we watch a movie?Alexander asked as I cleared the dinner dishes.

One movie,I agreed. But something calm. No superheroes tonight.

They settled on an animated film about talking animals, and I left them curled up on the couch with Gas between them, my mother keeping watch from her chair with a book in her lap.

I didn’t want to be a bad person. Really, I didn’t. But I simply didn’t have the patience or rationality left to deal with this kind of manipulation. I’d used up my reserves during those dark years with Kyle, and I wasn’t about to let another toxic situation poison the peace I’d worked so hard to build.

A text from Thomas interrupted me:

I know today was awful. Can we talk? I’m downstairs if you’re willing to take a walk.

I grabbed a coat from my closet and quietly made my way to the living room. The twins were already drowsy, their eyes heavy as they watched the movie. My mother looked up questioningly.
