Alexander was pulling on my skirt, his little hands clutching the fabric tightly.

“Mama,” he whispered, “I didn’t mean to bump into her.”

I didn’t look away from Ketty’s sneering face as I reached down to touch Alexander’s head gently. “I know, sweetheart. You didn’t do anything wrong.”

Ketty stumbled backward, her hand flying to her cheek, her eyes wide with shock and disbelief.

“Mama!” Ethan’s voice was small and frightened.

I immediately crouched down and touched his head. “It’s okay, babies.”

“You… you hit me,” Ketty said, her voice filled with disbelief and rising hysteria. “You actually hit me!”

“Yes,” I replied, standing back up to my full height and meeting her gaze directly. “I hit you.”

But I wasn’t finished. Not even close.

I took another step toward Ketty, who was still holding her reddening cheek.

“Let me make this crystal clear,” I said, my voice dropping to a whisper. “If you ever dare to speak about my children like that again, what just happened will seem like a gentle pat.”

Ketty’s face contorted with rage and humiliation. “You’re insane! These people all saw what you did! I’m calling the police to have you arrested!”

“Please do,” I replied with unnatural calm. “Call the police. Call security. Call whoever you want.” I paused, letting my words sink in. “Better yet, why don’t you call Taylor over? Isn’t that what you wanted to accomplish?”

Ketty seemed like she was about to burst a blood vessel.

But before Ketty could formulate a response, the crowd began to part like the Red Sea.

Taylor and Victoria were approaching, moving through the gathered guests with the confidence of royalty making a grand entrance.

Ketty saw them coming and immediately straightened her spine, her expression shifting from rage to anticipation. She turned around triumphantly, not even bothering to hide her excitement at the prospect of seeing me publicly humiliated.

Taylor looked absolutely stunning in her role as Sophie Field.

“Hey, Mia,” Taylor said, her voice carrying that honey–sweet tone that had always made my skin crawl. She gave me a slow, deliberate once–over, her eyes taking in every detail of my appearance. “You look terrible.”

Victoria smiled beside her like a predator who had cornered her prey. “Leaving so early?” she asked with false sweetness. “The party’s just getting started.”

Thomas appeared at my side, his hand finding mine and squeezing gently.

I caught his eye briefly. He understood, moving to guide Alexander and Ethan to a safer distance.

I wanted to spend some quality time with Taylor too.

After all, she had gone to so much trouble to orchestrate this entire evening just to make sure I witnessed her triumph.

“Taylor,” I said,. “You look great. Prison must have taught you some interesting things.”
