Chapter 305 Get. Out. Of. The. Car.

Mia’s POV

Mom, look!Alexander rushed over first, holding a cute cupcake decorated with rainbow sprinkles and what appeared to be a lopsided smiley face made of chocolate chips.

His gray eyes sparkled with pride as he held up his creation, completely oblivious to the frosting smeared across his cheek and the flour dusting his dark hair. The cupcake was slightly crooked, but his beam of accomplishment could have powered the entire city block.

Look, Mom!Ethan appeared beside his brother, more carefully cradling his own small cake. His creation was characteristically precisevanilla cupcake with methodically applied chocolate frosting in perfect swirls, topped with exactly six rainbow sprinkles arranged in a symmetrical

pattern.

These are incredible,I said, crouching down to their level and accepting Alexander’s enthusiastic offering. The cupcake was still warm, the frosting slightly melted from his small hands. I took a careful bite. This is definitely the best cupcake I’ve ever had.

Really?Alexander bounced on his toes, his entire body radiating excitement. Ms. Rodriguez said

we could take them home to share with our families!

Ethan held his cupcake. I followed the recipe exactly. The frostingtocake ratio is mathematically optimal.

Mathematically optimal frosting,I repeated, fighting back a smile as I sampled his creation. Ethan, this is perfection.

Both boys glowed under my praise. Alexander had somehow managed to get frosting in his hair,

while Ethan had a small streak of flour across his nose that he hadn’t noticed.

The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the preschool parking lot as families emerged from the building, children clutching their baking projects and chattering excitedly about their culinary adventures. The air smelled like vanilla and sugar, mixed with the exhaust from cars and the distant scent of someone grilling dinner.

Come on, boys,I said, standing and taking their free hands. Let’s get these masterpieces home safely.

I led them toward our car. Alexander was explaining his theory that different colored sprinkles tasted different when I reached for my car door handle. That’s when I heard it.

A sharp cry. Young. Frightened.

I looked up, scanning the parking lot for the source of the sound.

Across the street, near a familiar black Mercedes, I saw her.

Madison.

She was standing beside Victoria’s expensive car, her small body rigid with the kind of stillness that comes from learned fear. In her hands was the remnants of what had clearly been a cupcakenow just crumbs and smeared frosting scattered across the pavement at her feet.

Madison dropped her cake,Ethan said, following my gaze.

Boys,I said. Get in the car. Right now. Both of you. Get in your seats and buckle up.I said.

Then I was watching Victoria. Victoria grabbed Madison by the back of her head. Madison’s second cry was muffled as Victoria shoved her roughly toward the open car door.

Mama?Ethan’s voice was small.

Everything’s fine,I lied smoothly. “I just need to speak to someone for a minute. Stay in the car and don’t get out for any reason. Do you understand?

We understand,they said.

I closed their door and activated the child locks.

My feet carried me across the asphalt. Victoria was already in the driver’s seat, her hands gripping the steering wheel with white knuckles.

I knocked on her window with more force than strictly necessary.

For a moment, she just stared at me through the glass, her blue eyes wide. She lookedafraid.?

Slowly, she lowered the window.

What?she said. What do

you

want?

Get out of the car,I said.

I don’t know-

Get. Out. Of. The, Car,

No argument.

Victoria hesitated for another moment, then slowly opened her door and stepped onto the pavement.

I could smell alcohol on her breath.

You’re drunk.I said, stepping closer until we were almost nose to nose.

She straightened. That’s none of your business-

It is when you’re driving with a child in the car.
