“Nonsense!” Victoria said, her voice cracking slightly. “You’re being arrogant, aren’t you? The Field family won’t let you off that easily!”

But her tone lacked the vicious confidence she’d wielded at the cruise dinner just days earlier.

I’m curious—it seems like the bad guys aren’t doing so well lately.

“Mind your own business, Victoria!” I snapped, my grip on her collar tightening. “If you really get into a scandal, do you think Taylor will help you? She even abandoned her own parents.”

Victoria’s face went pale.

I released her suddenly, and she stumbled backward against the car door.

“Mommy!”

Madison’s small voice cut through the tension like a knife. She had somehow managed to open the car door and was scrambling out, her eyes filled with tears that made tracks down her pale cheeks.

“Please don’t hurt my mommy!” Madison begged.

I softened my voice, crouching down to Madison’s eye level. “Sweet girl, I’m not trying to be mean. I’m just talking to your mommy about some important grown–up things.”

Madison’s lower lip trembled as she looked between Victoria and me, clearly confused by the adult drama unfolding around her. She moved closer to me, her small fingers grabbing onto the hem of my

shirt like a lifeline.

That’s when I saw it.

A dark stain on the sleeve of her pristine white cardigan. At first glance, it looked like it could be chocolate frosting from the cupcakes, but the color was wrong. Too dark. Too rust–colored.

My blood pressure spiked instantly.

“Madison, sweetheart,” I said gently, trying to keep my voice calm even as rage began building in my chest like a pressure cooker about to explode. “Can you show me your arm?”

“No,” Victoria said sharply. “Don’t touch her.”

I ignored Victoria completely. “Madison, can you lift up your sleeve for me? Just for a second?”

Madison looked up at her mother with those wide blue eyes, seeking permission. Victoria shook her head frantically, but Madison was already pulling up the white fabric.

What I saw made my vision go red around the edges.

Fresh scratches ran along Madison’s thin forearm, some still seeping blood. They were clearly fingernail marks–adult fingernail marks that had been dragged across her delicate skin with enough force to break the surface. The pattern was unmistakable: four parallel lines where fingers had gripped and twisted.

“Is this how you treat your daughter?!” The words exploded from my throat.

Victoria’s eyes darted away from mine, unable to meet my gaze.

I gently took Madison’s arm, examining the wounds more closely. They were fresh, probably inflicted within the last hour. Some were deeper than others, suggesting that Victoria had dug her nails in harder when Madison had tried to pull away.

“These need to be cleaned and bandaged,” I said, my voice deadly quiet now. “When did this happen, Madison?”

“Mom told me don’t eat sweet,” Madison whispered, her voice so small I had to strain to hear her.” Mommy got angry.”

“Put her down!” Victoria screamed.

“Watch me,” I said over my shoulder, not slowing my pace.

“I don’t mean to!” Victoria’s voice cracked.

“Listen to me very carefully,” I said, stepping closer to her again. “If I ever see another mark on that child–if I even suspect that you’ve hurt her again–I will call the police. I will call Child Protective Services. I will make sure everyone knows exactly what kind of mother you really are.”

Victoria nodded slightly, her eyes still avoiding mine.

“Do you understand me?” I pressed.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“And Victoria?” I added. “If you think Taylor or the Field family will protect you when this comes out, you’re deluding yourself.”

Without another word, I turned and walked back to my car.

I got into the driver’s seat and immediately locked all the doors.

“Mama,” Alexander said from the backseat, “we saw you fighting with Madison’s mother.”

I looked at them in the rearview mirror. Boys were staring at me with wide, serious eyes.
