I said nothing to Papa after that.

What was I supposed to say to that when it was such an obvious lic?

I looked away from Medea, looking straight ahead, my chest tight to the point of pain and it made it difficult to breathe, a huge lump in my throat, but I still kept my chin high.
Even though I was falling apart, I still couldn’t leave. I still had to sit in this damning meeting until the end. I could leave, I could stand up and walk away, giving an excuse, but that would leave a mark on my perfect slant.
So I sat down, torturing myself just because I had something to prove. Sometimes, I wonder if maybe I was the weapon formed to fashion against myself.
The meeting went on, Papa still held my hand underneath the table, and I felt that burning gaze on me again, but I didn’t look at him. If I do, I might snap and stab that bastard with a pen.
The meeting finally came at the end–thank God–and the executives left one by one. I was about to stand up and leave, but Papa, still holding my hand, stopped me.
So I sat still, looking straight ahead. When the room was finally empty, that was when he said, “Come to dinner tonight.”
“You could have said that without waiting for everybody to leave,” I said without looking at him, tugging at my hand and he finally let go.
“Yes, but I wanted to spend a few more minutes with my daughter. Come tonight. She won’t be there. Bring your husband if you want or come alone, but come.”
I finally looked at him. “That’s beginning to sound like an order.”
“If I must order my daughter to have dinner with me, then so be it.”
I sighed dramatically. “Then since I’ve been forced, I’ll come.”
He smiled, leaning down and kissing my forehead gently. “You remind me so much of your mother.”
A spike went through my chest and my eyes pricked. I stood up suddenly, turning to leave. “I’ll see you tonight.”
I headed to the door but when I heard Papa groan, my head snapped back, my eyes widening.
“No need to fret,” he said as he struggled to get on his feet, the hand holding his cane shaking. “I’ve stayed in the same position for too long and that’s why it’s this painful.”
I walked to him, almost running, and assisted him by wrapping his arm around my shoulder. He rested his weight on me, breathing heavily.

“Gianna!” I shouted and she immediately burst into the room. “Get his car ready and tell them to be considerate of his leg.”
She nodded, storming out of the room.
“You’re being dramatic, Belladonna,” Papa said even as he leaned all his weight on me. He was a tall man, and also heavy so it was a struggle for me to carry me.
“Don’t tell me that when you can barely walk on your own.”
“I just need to exercise my leg a little bit.”
“Then exercise it while I help you.”
We got outside the room, but instead of seeing someone to help, Kade was who we saw. He was leaning against the wall, but when he saw us, he pushed off, rushing over.
“Let me take over,” he said without asking any questions and I transferred Papa’s weight to him.
He helped Papa walk without breaking a sweat while I was panting, sweat on my forehead.
We moved to the elevator, silent and I pushed in the number. The soft hum of the elevator was the only sound that filled the small space as we went down. I stayed as far away from Kade as the small space would allow, looking anywhere but at him even though I felt his gaze burning a hole through the side of my face.
“The atmosphere is quite suffocating,” Papa mused, glancing sideways at me, a small grin on his lips.
I groaned, looking away from him. “Papa, there are some things that you shouldn’t feel inclined to point out.”
“Why, I just pointed out the suffocating atmosphere. What’s wrong about that, Kade?”
“Absolutely nothing, sir,” Kade answered while still looking at me.
I looked between the two of them. Since when have these two gotten so close? Papa had looked at him that wedding night like he was an alien, and now they were suddenly close?
The elevator door opened and the people who were supposed to help Papa were already outside and they rushed in as soon as the door was open.
“Eight, Belladonna,” Papa said without looking back.
I sighed. “Yes, yes.”
“What’s happening at eight?” Kade asked and that was when I suddenly remembered that we were both alone in the elevator.
Just as I was about to rush out, the elevator closed. I cursed under my breath. Traitorous thing.
“We’re going to my father’s place for dinner,” I answered, resting my back on the wall and folding my arms.
“I don’t remember agreeing to that.”

Chapter 134
My head snapped to him, my eyes hard. “Your father–in–law has been invited to dinner, you blockhead. So you should accept it with a smile!”
He just shrugged. “I’m pretty sure he just asked you and said I could come along if I wanted.”
I said nothing and just pressed my lips together. How did he know?
I took a deep breath. “Go to dinner with me.”
He crossed his arms. “That sounds like an order.”
I took an even deep breath. “Please come to dinner with me.”
“That sounds like you’re forcing yourself to speak out the words.”

I glared at him. He looked back at him with a stupid grin on his good–looking face. A stupid grin that I want to keep seeing even if I was angry with the bastard.
“Please, Kade,” I said, my voice soft, my facial muscles relaxed. “Come to dinner with me.”
The grin widened and I wanted to smack him. “That’s more like it.”
I huff, looking away from him and looking ahead. We haven’t pressed any number on the elevator so I pushed in the number that would take me to the ninth floor.
