Chapter 801 Nothing Like Yours
When he came back, she hurried to pour him a glass of juice. “Well? What did Tess say?”
The word “Tess” slipped from Artemis‘ lips, softer than she meant it to. It was her way of pretending, if only for a heartbeat, that she could live with the girl’s existence.
She spoke softly, trying to seem kind and understanding in front of Dale.

After all, ever since the Ashen Pact had run into trouble, Dale’s patience with her had been wearing thin…
She was afraid that if things kept going this way, their relationship would start to fall apart.
Yet even when she called Tessa’s name so gently, Dale’s expression didn’t soften in the slightest.
Instead, his gaze on her grew deeper–and filled with scrutiny.
He had never looked at her that way before; it was as if she had done something unforgivable, and he was trying to see right through her.
Artemis felt a chill crawl up her spine under that stare. “Wh–why are you looking at me like that?”
“Nothing,” Dale said flatly.
His reply hit like a blade. People always find something to doubt–especially the ones they love.
No one had ever mentioned in front of him whether Lina and Lana looked like him or not.
Sure, the twins weren’t lookers–but every parent thinks their kids are perfect, no matter what anyone else says.
And since they were twins, he’d always assumed their features were just the result of sharing nutrients in the womb–one taking from the other, leaving both a little imperfect.
As for the idea that they weren’t his… that had never crossed his mind.
But then Lewis and Silas had said it–that sentence like a dagger, “Their features look nothing like yours.”
Those words pierced Dale’s chest like a spike.
My own children… don’t look like me? He had never thought about it before. But now, as he looked at Artemis–her face beginning to show the traces of age–he couldn’t find any resemblance between her and the twins either.

Artemis noticed that he was still staring at her, and though she didn’t know what was going on, anxiety began to build in her chest.
She crouched down beside him and took his hand. “Dale.”
The moment he lowered his gaze, his eyes were full of frost. “Why don’t Lina and Lana look like me?”
The question–and that icy stare–made Artemis‘ face go rigid.
Dale’s eyes locked on her; he didn’t miss a single flicker of emotion.
When her face froze, a cold glint flashed through his gaze.
“Why don’t they look like you,
either?”
If they were truly their children, the kids should at least share some resemblance with one of them.
But now that Dale thought about it, Lina and Lana looked like neither of them.
Everyone had long accepted that they didn’t resemble him. But why didn’t they look like Artemis?
Two questions, one after another–each like a thunderclap splitting her mind apart.
“What are you talking about?”
Artemis thought. What did he mean, the children don’t look like us? Why would he suddenly ask something like that? Did Tessa say something to him? That little witch…
She had been trying so hard to accept her, and instead of being grateful, Tessa had stabbed her in the back.
Artemis‘ breathing turned shallow. “Dale, what… what are you doubting?”
Not his children…
Her eyes filled with tears of wounded innocence, but inside, her heart was in turmoil.
All these years, she’d worried he might one day ask that very question–because the children truly didn’t look like him.
But he never had. She thought the danger had passed. And now…
This was all Tessa’s fault. Ever since she came to Redwood, she had thrown the entire Ashen Pact into chaos–and now she wanted to ruin her relationship with Dale too.
