Chapter 11
The whole mess over those dishes wasn’t going away anytime soon.
Even though Margaret had the chet remake the same recipes, they tasted like generic restaurant food,
Richard had been bragging to all his buddies about how incredible they were, but this wasn’t cutting it.
He didn’t hold back. “Why does this taste completely different from last time? Evangeline, honey, did you mess with the recipe?”
Ivangeline kept shooting panicked looks at her parents.
Their whole plan had been for her to win over Richard with those dishes. Then the Ashford company projects would definitely go to the Cross family.
They’d thought of everything.
Except me not playing along.
With everyone just staring at her in silence, Evangeline was practically dripping sweat and finally had to say something. “Mr. Ashford, those weren’t… I didn’t actually make them.”
She looked to Margaret for backup, then over at Nicholas, who was white-knuckling his hands.
She got all teary-eyed, which was clearly killing certain people.
Right on schedule, Nicholas jumped up from his seat. “Grandpa, those dishes you loved were Gabrielle’s. Evangeline didn’t have anything to do with it.”
Margaret finally jumped in with her complaints. “Right, right, my mistake from before. But today your wonderful granddaughter-in-law refused to lift a finger n the kitchen. Obviously she doesn’t give a damn about you.”
Mrs. Cross, who’d been staying quiet, decided to join the pile-on. “Well, some people just aren’t cut out for this lifestyle. Even when they try to blend in, it’s painfully obvious they don’t belong. How could she possibly understand how things work around here?”
almost laughed watching these people throw me under the bus with just a few sentences.
When I caught Nicholas’s eye, he grabbed my hand, trying to be supportive or whatever.
Like he was saying. “Sorry babe, but you’re gonna have to be the scapegoat again.”
Then he started covering for me. “Grandpa, cut Gabrielle some slack. She’s been under the weather today. She didn’t mean to be disrespectful.”
