Chapter 15
We’d already scheduled our appointment at the courthouse to finalize the divorce.
But then Nicholas called me up. “You left some stuff here. You coming to get it or what?”
I was about to tell him to just throw it all away.
Then Evangeline snatched the phone away from him.
She sounded so damn pleased with herself, acting all fake concerned. “Gabrielle, if you don’t want any of that stuff, I’m just gonna dump it all. Now that you’re divorcing Nicholas, money’s probably gonna be tight. You could sell some of this and make decent cash!”
I had to admit, the bitch had a point.
Besides, I’d been making lunch for Evangeline for months. I’d definitely earned whatever was mine.
When I got to Nicholas’s house, Evangeline was already waiting at the front door.
Probably making sure I wouldn’t bump into him.
While I was gathering my stuff, she brought me a glass of water.
“Take your time, no rush at all.”
She was being so fake-nice I almost didn’t recognize her.
She sat on the bed chatting with me. “Honestly, you don’t need to stress about anything. It’s not like we’re enemies now. Since you’re divorcing Nicholas, I’ve got no reason to mess with you anymore.”
I wasn’t in the mood for her bullshit, so I packed even faster.
Right as I was heading downstairs, she started swinging her feet and dropped this bomb:
She dangled her legs, then let out a wistful little sigh.
“I’m kinda jealous of you, actually. At least you got three whole years with Nicholas. If I wasn’t completely head-over-heels for the guy, I sure as hell wouldn’t want to marry someone’s leftovers!”
“Come on, I’ll walk you out.”
The study door upstairs was closed tight.I knew Nicholas was hiding in there.
But he never showed his face.
When I climbed into the Uber, and in a daze, I thought I caught a glimpse of someone at the study window. He stood motionless, watching my car drive away.
