She shot a sharp glance at her assistant and barked, “Tie this woman up and throw her out onto the street. Let everyone see just how shameless Brian’s woman really is.”
Just then, Jason heard the commotion in the hallway and stepped out of his office. He positioned himself between Fiona and Elara, frowning at his mother. “Mom, this is still a company. The Lawrence family’s reputation doesn’t need you to defend it like this.”
Fiona stared at her son in disbelief. “You’re calling me out for losing my composure—all for her?”
“Let her go,” Jason said flatly.
“Oh, wonderful. Just wonderful. Today, I’ll teach this little vixen a lesson myself. Let’s see who dares stop me.”
She raised her hand, ready to slap Elara, but Jason caught her wrist before she could make contact.
Fiona’s anger only flared hotter. “Even her own husband doesn’t want her. Brian would rather keep his distance than touch her, and yet you—what do you see in a woman so used and discarded—”
Elara had heard enough. She cut in, her voice steady. “You know, Mrs. Lawrence, your behavior today is a true testament to your family’s class.”
“Did you hear that? She’s insulting our entire family, and you’re still protecting her!” Fiona struggled to break free from Jason’s grip, lunging forward to strike Elara, even ordering the assistants and secretaries to step in.
The scene erupted into chaos.
At that moment, two men emerged from the chairman’s office.
“It’s working hours, and this place sounds like a fish market. What do you think you’re doing?” Victor Lawrence’s commanding voice brought the room to an abrupt hush.
Elara spotted Zane beside him and froze in surprise.
Weren’t there supposed to be urgent matters that meant she’d have to wait half an hour?
“Honey…” Fiona, suddenly the picture of wounded dignity, hurried to Victor’s side. “That married woman has come to the office to seduce your son! She called me uncultured and even cursed our marriage—”
Zane and Elara locked eyes for a brief second before he coolly looked away. After the way she’d humiliated him this morning—and then stood him up—she probably wanted nothing to do with him.
