“I want you to be honest with me,” she added.
Jason pressed his lips together, a small smile flickering across his face as he paused for a moment.
“I really do appreciate how straightforward you are. Having a conversation with you doesn’t require mental gymnastics.”
Elara just raised an eyebrow, saying nothing.
Jason leaned his elbow on the desk, his expression turning serious. “You know exactly what you want out of life. You’re clear-headed, decisive, and never one to drag your feet. You also know when to be upfront and when to play your cards close to the chest. You have boundaries—and you know how to get results. That’s exactly the kind of woman I want as my wife.”
He glanced around the office before continuing, “You probably know a bit about the Lawrence family. I’m set to inherit everything eventually, so I don’t take the choice of a wife lightly. But I also have no interest in letting my parents choose for me.”
Elara laughed at that. “Aren’t you counting your chickens? Ryan could still give you a run for your money, and your uncle doesn't have any kids yet. Both could become your rivals.”
Jason’s smile was enigmatic. “My uncle will never have children.”
Elara was caught off guard. “Why not?”
Jason’s gaze dropped for a moment. “It’s a... family trait among the Lawrence men. If you marry me, you’ll find out soon enough.”
Elara’s lashes fluttered, but she didn’t press for details. Instead, she slid a contract across the desk toward him.
It was an agreement for a technical partnership—something to do with the integrated energy storage system for smart homes.
Jason skimmed it, then looked up. “What’s this about?”
Elara smiled faintly. “Consider it repayment for saving my life last time. This storage system is more stable, has greater capacity, is cheaper and safer. With it, your smart home project won’t have to worry about backup power ever again.”
Realization dawned on Jason. “So what you’re saying is…”
Elara pressed her lips together. “We don’t owe each other anything.”
Jason leaned back, his gaze sharpening as it settled on her.
“If you marry me, you’ll be part of the Lawrence family, and I’ll make sure nothing can touch you. I promise you this—once we’re married, there won’t be any women hanging around me. Brian couldn’t give you that, but I can. Whatever he offered, I can give you more.”
