Damian answered the call.

At the same time, he gave a casual wave to dismiss all those self–important, cliquish executives in his office.

They bolted out like they’d been granted a stay of execution.

One more second in that room and they’d have needed ventilators.

Killian stood in the corner of the office, looking as stunned as if he’d stepped into some bizarre dream.

“Ms. Lawson, what can I do for you?” Damian held his phone to his ear, his tone characteristically cool and detached.

“So, here’s the thing,” Beatrice said. “I was supposed to come back to work the day after tomorrow since my leg is better, but I need to visit my grandmother’s place… I’d like to take another week off.”

Her voice sounded perfectly normal. Anyone who wasn’t paying close attention wouldn’t notice anything off, but he knew she was just putting on a brave face.

Damian went quiet for a few seconds.

“You’re really getting addicted to skipping work, aren’t you? Don’t tell me you’re planning to milk this injury to slack off forever.”

“That’s not it…” she protested.

“I expect you at work the day after tomorrow.”

“What about five days-”

“Not a chance. I want to see you in person the day after tomorrow morning.”

Beatrice paused for five seconds before answering simply, “I’ll fight dirty and negotiate with them.”

Damian was speechless. He let out a sigh loaded with mixed emotions. “Ms. Lawson, you’re scaring me.”

“I don’t usually go there,” Beatrice explained, “but they’ve pushed me way too far.”

“I meant your blind confidence is what’s scaring me.”

“You’re smart enough to figure out that Autumn’s just the puppet and the Fairfax family is pulling the strings. What makes you think you can take on two powerful families all by yourself?”

“I’ve got my ways,” she shot back stubbornly.

“Beatrice, having guts is great and all, but courage can’t replace actual power. A unicorn charging into a pride of lions isn’t brave. It’s just suicide.”

“Even if I kill myself, I’m taking the mastermind down with me first! I don’t care if we both go down together!”

As soon as the words left her mouth, Beatrice realized she was talking crazy.

Damian’s face turned dead serious.

Beatrice could feel him getting pissed even through the phone.

“Sorry,” she backpedaled. “I shouldn’t have said stupid stuff like that.”

Damian’s expression softened a bit. “Since you’re one of my people now, you represent my reputation too. You come to work on time, and I’ll figure out a way to solve this mess for you. Deal?”

His voice was pure templation. It had that whole “just nod and I’ll make all your problems disappear” energy.

After waiting forever with no response, Damian asked, “Still thinking about it?”

“I appreciate your kindness, but I need to handle my own problems! Thanks anyway! Goodbye!” Beatrice blurted it all out in a panic and hung up.

Damian was suddenly at a loss for words.

He thoughtfully set his phone aside, and after a moment, something seemed to click. His eyes darkened.

Meanwhile, Beatrice clutched her phone for a solid five minutes before her heartbeat finally steadied itself.

Violet was home.

She’d had a court hearing that morning that wrapped up after

noon.

The case wasn’t going well.

The opposition had dropped new evidence on them, forcing her to request a recess. Afterward, she’d grabbed lunch with her, client and hit up a nearby coffee shop to strategize.

By the time she saw Autumn’s statement, it was almost one o’clock. She’d been headed back to the firm but changed course straight for home instead.

“Did Autumn gel crazy or something?” she fumed, tossing her briefcase onto the chair. Despite her youth, her forehead was creased so deeply it practically formed a hashtag.

Beatrice took a moment to compose herself.

She cleared her head of all the messy, random thoughts swirling around before responding, “It’s weird as hell, right?”

Violet crossed her arms over her chest, pacing back and forth in front of the sofa.

“If she can issue a statement, so can we. We’ve got stuff that’s ten times juicier than hers. But if we go there, you and Desmond won’t have even a shred of dignity left between you.”

Beatrice’s eyes gradually turned ice–cold. “The Belmonts didn’t exactly leave me with options either.”

Violet plopped down on the sofa. “Look, I’m just saying Desmond might not even know what’s going on. There’s no way he’d do something like this on purpose. You guys shared eight good years together…”

“Even if he didn’t do it himself, isn’t he still responsible for this whole nightmare? I tried to smooth things out for him.”

With a short pause, Beatrice continued, “If he’d just finalized the divorce properly, none of these would’ve happened. Madeline, Autumn, and I did all that just because of him. Don’t you think he deserves whatever blowback he gets?”

Violet fell silent.

After a moment, she nodded. “Alright then. Let’s hit back hard. If it’s war they want, let’s burn it all down. I’m your divorce. lawyer and your best friend. I’ll speak for you.”

The two women jumped into action immediately.

They made lists of points to refute, angles to attack, and evidence to present.

Just as they finished preparing everything and were about to record a video response on their phones, the doorbell rang.

“I’ll get it,” Violet said. She walked to the door and peeked through the peephole.

It was Desmond.

Violet almost exploded with anger, then quickly collected herself.

She turned on her phone’s recording app, walked back to the living room, and tucked it behind a sofa cushion.
