Marcella said, "If you can't afford it, I have a bunch of Talbot's old clothes left over at my place. Want me to bring them over to you?"

"No thanks," Drusilla replied, hardly believing Marcella meant well. It was just another dig at her.

Marcella continued, "Suit yourself. But Drusilla, look at you. You had it so good when you were with us, Stantons! Not like now... look at the state of you! Goes to show, a woman needs to know her place. What good is an education if you end up as the other woman? That’s so disgraced, right?"

"Thanks, but I think I'm doing much better now," Drusilla retorted.

Sure, things were better before, but not because the Stantons were so great! Her father was kind to her, giving her pocket money and all. So life was good even when she was pregnant and staying at home.

These past few years might not have been as materially comfortable, but they were fulfilling. She no longer had to rely on her father; she could support herself and take care of her two little ones.

"You call this better? I never knew you know how to make the best of a bad situation," Marcella sneered.

While the adults talked, the kids started their own conversation.

Talbot walked over to Colton, sized him up, and asked, "How old are you?"

Colton gave Talbot a cold look and said nothing. He didn't like this Talbot guy! Especially after he had just called him a hobo. He wasn't one!

Annoyed by the silence, Talbot retorted, "What, are you mute? You literally can’t talk, right?"

"Colton is not mute," Cormac stepped in, standing up for his brother. "He just doesn't want to talk to you."

"Why wouldn't he want to talk to me?" Talbot boasted. "Is it because he's not as tall as me? Am I super tall? All the kids in kindergarten are shorter than me; they all look up to me. I'm their boss."

Talbot, being tall and strong for his age, had an advantage in kindergarten.
