Verena exclaimed, "I was just trying to figure out if Enoch was Colton and Cormac's dad, and bam, the results came out so fast! They really are Enoch's kids! Isn't that just amazing? You and Enoch got hitched, and now Colton and Cormac can go live with the Taylor family. How great is that? They've got a dad now!"
"Verena!" Drusilla yelled, on the verge of a meltdown, "Have you lost your mind? How many times have I told you, over and over? You kept telling me everything would be fine! Is that how you assured me, by taking the kids for a paternity test?"
Verena, seeing Drusilla's reaction, said, "I was only trying to help, you know?"
"Help? Do I look like I need this kind of 'help'? What am I supposed to do now?"
"Fine, I'm leaving." Verena, a bit miffed by the conversation, stood up and walked out without another word.
She left without touching her meal.
After she left, the door closing behind her, Drusilla heard it and glanced at Colton and Cormac. The two little ones looked up at her, their faces filled with concern.
Looking at them, she felt a headache coming on.
After a while, it was Cormac who broke the silence, "Mom, are you okay?"
"Just keep eating." Drusilla tried to lighten the mood, knowing she shouldn't have reacted so strongly in front of her sons. But she was indeed panicking moments ago!
Cormac looked at Drusilla and said, "Mom, Aunt Verena said I’ve got a dad now; is it true?"
Cormac's question caught Drusilla off guard. She looked at Cormac, then at Colton. The mention of a dad seemed to light up something in both boys, an expectation they could hardly hide.
Other kids have dads, and they've grown up without one. Now hearing they might have a dad, the hope in their eyes was unmistakable.
