Chapter 138 Unintentional Provocation
“What?” Lucien arched a brow, voice low and lazy.

Jude was trying to set Kaia up with someone else? Was he trying to get Lucien cheated on?

Once they finished smoking, they headed back. Kaia had already wrapped up the meeting on her end.
Julian told them the final approval would need a signature from Lucien, and that they could head out for now.
He immediately turned around and walked straight into Lucien’s office, file in hand.
Lucien didn’t even look up. “Leave it there.”
Julian carefully set the folder down on the edge of the desk. “Mr. Graves, Vanguard’s team came to the office today.”
Lucien’s pen paused mid-signature. She didn’t mention that this morning.
He gave a small nod. “Yeah, I know. Is that urgent?”
“Not particularly. Once you approve it, we’ll proceed with the next phase.”
Lucien set the pen aside, picked up the file, and flipped through a few pages. Then, casually but deliberately, he asked, “Have they left?”
It was clear who they referred to.
“Not yet. I told them to wait outside for a bit. Oh, Mr. Graves, while I was chatting with Jude just now, he mentioned
this promising young prosecutor. Said he was thinking of introducing him to Mrs. Graves…”

“Gotta say, Mr. Rhodes, I envy you. Carcer’s going great, you’ve got a kid-it’s the whole package.”
Julian took a drag, offering a polite smile. “Can’t complain.”
He knew Jude had been through a divorce, so he didn’t want to say too much about it.
But something about Jude felt off today. He was somehow…
eager.
“I’m forty now,” Jude said, exhaling slowly. “Long gave up on the idea of marriage. Don’t know what’s with the younger crowd either. No one seems interested in settling down.”
He paused for a moment and then added, “Take Kaia—she got burned by some loser and still hasn’t bounced back. I’ve been thinking about introducing her to a few solid guys, you know? Help her move on. She’s a sweet girl. She really can’t handle another heartbreak.”
Julian paused, cigarette halfway to his lips.
Okay, wait. Did he just assume I was hitting on Mrs. Graves?
Was Jude seriously picturing him as some creep preying on the poor innocent junior associate?
Julian rolled his eyes internally but kept his expression neutral. He wasn’t about to explain that he was just trying to stay on the good side of the boss’ wife.
this guy doesn’t know a damn thing.

Julian arrived around ten-thirty to check on their progress. He seemed satisfied with the revised version of the agreement.
During a break, Jude chatted casually with him, though he couldn’t help noticing the way Julian kept glancing at Kaia.
Don’t tell me…
Jude suddenly felt a headache coming on.
Is Mr. Rhodes into Kaia?
Trying to steer him away from that idea, Jude said lightly, “So, Mr. Rhodes, I heard your baby’s a month old now?”
Julian smiled, “Yeah. My wife’s planning a little celebration, actually.”
Jude didn’t care about the baby. He just wanted to remind Julian, “Don’t even think about it.”
“That’s nice. Should have a lovely dinner with the family.”
Unfortunately, Julian didn’t seem to catch the subtext. Jude watched his still-too-interested expression and stood up. “Mr. Rhodes, care for a smoke?”
Julian pulled his eyes away from Kaia and smiled, “Sure.”
They stepped into the firm’s smoking area. Jude lit one for him. 3/6

“Great,” he said and then grinned. “By the way, did you know? Yesterday, at Alden’s wedding, Mr. Graves showed up with his fiancée! Well, technically not a fiancée—they’ve already registered the marriage. Just haven’t held the wedding yet.”
He let out a low chuckle. “Sent shockwaves through the social circle. Can’t imagine how many heiresses had their dreams crushed.”
Kaia forced a polite smile. “Is that so?”
Great. Being the center of the gossip mill feels amazing.
Then Jude’s tone shifted. “Kaia, have you considered dating again? If you’re not seeing anyone, I actually know quite a few single guys. There’s this prosecutor, twenty-nine, solid guy. I ran into him at court the other day-heard he’s single.”
“Jude, please,” Kaia said with a laugh, throwing him a playful look, “don’t try to set me up.”
She was married, but she couldn’t exactly say that. Which made every excuse sound weak and awkward.
Seeing her reluctance, Jude dropped the subject. There was something about getting older. It gave people an irresistible urge to play matchmaker.
Man or woman, didn’t matter.
After parking the car, they headed into the familiar conference room. The accountants were already there.

Lucien had no idea that all his efforts were being completely undermined-turned into a joke, really-by someone with the best of intentions and the worst of timing.
The next morning, at Vanguard Law Firm…
Kaia had just arrived at her desk when Jude waved her over.
“Come on, Kaia, grab your laptop. You’re coming with me to Graves Group!”
She blinked. “Sure thing.”
They hurried down to the parking lot, Jude talking as he walked. “There’s an issue with the acquisition agreement. Mr. Rhodes called and asked us to head over.”
“Got it!”
Noticing how tense she was, Jude chuckled. “Relax. It’s nothing major. The accounting firm just wants to revise a fow terms in the contract.”
It made sense-this was Kaia’s first time in a deal this big. It was natural for her to be anxious.
Yeah, I’m a bit nervous. But don’t worry, Jude. After is 14:14
