Wedding My Ex’s Uncle

Chapter 14 An Unexpected Guest

Kaia had just paid the full amount yesterday.

Now she had only 180 grand left on all her bank cards.

Still, she thought it was worth it. In the Domont family, Claire was the only one who had ever been kind to her.

Because of that, Kaia would always set aside some time to visit her grandma every week.

Today was one of those days at the nursing home.

What she didn’t expect was to run into a tall, imposing figure.

Mr. Graves?she blurted out in surprise.

Lucien gave her a polite nod and explained, I’m here on my mother’s behalf to visit Madam Domont.

Claire and Lucien’s mom, Lydia Graves, had been thick as thieves since they were kids. That friendship later became the bridge that led to Kaia’s engagement to Alden.

And Lucien was Lydia’s lateborn son. Lydia had sacrificed her health giving birth to him in her later years, which led to her untimely passing.

She was barely fifty when she died,

When Lucien was a newborn, Claire had cradled the baby in her

arms.

But those were stories from another time.

Claire had always seen Lucien as a sweet junior, but Kaia could never quite relax around himfew people could.

Noticing her granddaughter’s unease, Claire quickly jumped in to smooth things over.

Kaia, come in! What a coincidenceboth you and Lucien came to see me today!

Kaia pulled a smile, her fingers unconsciously playing with the chain of her handbag, and took the single sofa farthest from

Lucien.

Lucien’s gaze darkened. Kaia, are you still sore about the car incident last time?Lucien inquired.

Youdon’t seem too happy to see me?

Kaia felt a rush of heat to her cheeks.

Mr. Graves, you’ve got the wrong idea. She took a breath, forcing another small smile as if to lend her words more weight. I’m glad to see you.

After chatting for a bit, Claire began to feel fatigued. She gave Kaia’s hand a gentle pat and said, Go back with Lucien.

Kaia didn’t want to leave. Grandma, I’ll come visit you in a couple of days.

Good girl. Go home. You don’t need to come so often. I know you’re a dutiful child. Just take good care of yourself!Claire reassured her.

Kaia accompanied Lucien to the door and then quickly made up an excuse about seeing the dean before scurrying off.

Lucien lowered his eyes and let out a soft laugh.

She’s quite the sprinter.

Kaia managed to get the deputy dean’s contact information and updated her grandma’s emergency contact to herself.

When she reached the parking lot, she froze in her tracks.

There, leaning against her car, was the man she thought had already left.

Kaia’s heart did a little flip.

As she approached, she asked, her voice laced with confusion,

You’re still here?

My car’s acting up. Kaia, mind giving me a lift?

Kaia stole a glance at his Maybach.

Do luxury cars conk out that easily?

All she did was flash a sweet smile. Sure thing. Where to? I’ll drop you off.

Just as she settled into the car, Kaia’s phone rang.

It was Nora Scott from Alfly Entertainment.

Kaia said, Now? I’m not sure I can swing it. If it’s urgent, I can send a colleague. Would that work?

It was Vanguard Law Firm’s team that signed the deal with Alfly, not Kaia herself. She could even send Warren in her stead without any issues.

Nora sounded a bit hesitant on the other end.

Well, Ms. Domont, could you come in person, please?

But I really can’t make it today. What am I supposed to do?

The service contract was set to expire in just over a dozen days.

Kaia was deadset on staying out of it as much as possible, as long as it didn’t cost Alfly Entertainment any money.

Okay then. Send Mr. Wright over.Nora relented.

After hanging up, Kaia quickly dialed Warren’s number to fill him in.

Only then did she realize there was someone else in the car.

Mr. Graves, where should I take you?

Lucien told her an address.

Then he casually asked, Kaia, did you and Alden have a tiff lately?

Kaia replied with a nonchalant air, Yeah, kind of.

Considering Lucien was from the Graves family, she couldn’t exactly speak ill of Alden in front of him.

Kind of?Lucien queried, eyeing her discreetly.

But her face betrayed no hint of any related emotions.

Kaia wasn’t in the mood to keep talking about this topic, so she quickly shifted gears.

How long are you planning to stay this time?

Most likely, I’m staying put.

Kaia was a bit startled. Staying? For good?

Lucien let out a soft chuckle. Why, it seems I’m not exactly a welcome guest in your eyes, Kaia.

Kaia stammered, NNo, I’m over the moon to have you here!

With that, she stepped on the gas like her life depended on it.

Keeping just within the speed limit, she managed to drop off Lucien in the passenger seat at his destination in a mere halfhour.

We’re here.

Lucien unbuckled his seatbelt at a leisurely pace, then pulled out his phone and started tapping away.

Thanks, Kaia. I owe you dinner sometime.

Kaia forced a smile. No problem.

Only after watching him walk away did she finally let out a sigh of relief.

Suddenly, her phone rang.

Kaia swiped open her phone screen and saw a message:

[Lucien sent you $1,430.00. Note: Thanks for the ride.]

WaitIs he doing this on purpose with these flirty number games?

This time around, Kaia didn’t accept the transfer.

Still, Lucien’s profile pic stayed pinned at the top of her chat list all day.

When Alden got the report from Nora, his face clouded over

even more.

He snatched up his suit jacket and shot to his feet.

So, she won’t show up, huh?

Well, then I’ll head over to Vanguard Law Firm myself to track her down!
