Chapter 143 Kaia’s Payback

Kimberly and Luna felt downright triumphant over what they’d just done.
The frustration that had been bottled up inside Luna for days finally felt like it had somewhere to go.
“You think she’ll come after us later?”
Kimberly snorted. “Please. Luna, no way. She’s probably still soaking wet in there, crying for help.”
“But why was she even here tonight?” Luna murmured.
“Who was here?” Alden asked, his voice low and slightly slurred from the alcohol.
Luna’s heart skipped a beat. “No one, just… no one.”
Right then, the door was thrown open.
Alden’s eyes lit up the moment he saw her. He jumped to his feet. His face lit up.
“Kaia? You came… Are you here for me?”
But then he caught sight of the man standing behind her and his smile faltered.

Kaia didn’t even glance in his direction. She didn’t know where the strength came from, but she grabbed the bucket from the bodyguard behind her and marched straight toward Kimberly and Luna.
Kimberly’s face drained of color. “Kaia, what are you doing?”
Luna scowled. “What, Kaia? Back to throwing punches again?”
A loud splash answered them as a bucket of cold water crashed down over their heads.
“Ma’am, there’s another one,” the bodyguard offered.
The second bucket came down with another splash, soaking
them from head to toe.
Kimberly let out a piercing scream. “Are you insane?!”
Kaia’s voice was calm, even amused. “Call me insane all you want, but you started it. Kimberly, let me make this clear—if you ever come at me again, it won’t just be water next time.”
She spun on her heel and walked away, not sparing Alden even the smallest glance.,
The gathering fell into awkward silence.

No one dared stop her-not with Lucien standing by the door, arms crossed and expression unreadable.
He didn’t have to say a word. One cold sweep of his eyes across the room was enough to shut everyone down.
As Kaia passed him, his lips curved ever so slightly. “Your hand okay?” he asked, his tone casual. “Next time, let the bodyguard do it.”
The men in the room felt like a heavy weight had dropped onto
their chests.
Alden’s eyes were bloodshot. He was barely holding it in.
What stung the most was the way Kaia, the girl who used to look at no one but him, now treated him like a complete stranger.
“Alden…” someone whispered cautiously.
Two soaked women, one chaotic mess, and an entire party that had just imploded.
The only sounds left were the soft sobbing of Luna and Kimberly, and Alden’s increasingly ragged breathing.
He felt like he was going to explode. His chest was tight, his thoughts in shambles. His eyes darkened as they landed on the two women still dripping on the floor.

His voice dropped, low and cold. “What exactly did the two of you do?”
“Alden, we didn’t do anything!” Kimberly snapped. “Kaia’s completely lost it! What the hell is wrong with her? This is a custom dress, for God’s sake! You seriously believe whatever nonsense she made up just because she married Lucien?”
“Shut up!” Alden snapped, slamming a hand against the table. “You idiot.”
His gaze slid over to Luna.
“Luna,” he said, his tone sharp. “Tell me.”
She bit her lip, face pale. The water had chilled her to the bone, but nothing compared to the way his words cut through her.
He was questioning her… because of Kaia?
“You’re taking her side?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Alden didn’t answer.
The room grew still, suffocating in its silence.
Someone tried to cut the tension. “Come on, Alden. Just take Luna home. She’ll catch a cold like this.”

Alden finally noticed the way Luna’s dress clung to her skin- practically see-through from being soaked.
He hadn’t realized it until now, but one of the rich kids nearby had been ogling her openly.
Alden yanked off his jacket and threw it over her shoulders.
“We’re leaving.”
No matter how furious he was, this wasn’t the place for it.

Outside, Kaia felt like the weight on her chest had finally lifted.
“Thanks, Lucien,” she said, her voice light with relief.
Lucien tilted his head, the corners of his lips curling in a smirk. “I helped you just now,” he said slowly, “so don’t you think it’s your turn to help me?”
Before she could ask what he meant, he wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her in.
