The old building had eight floors. After running up the stairs, Kaia and Lucien finally spotted a narrow flight of steps leading to the rooftop.
“I’ll go up first and help you climb over,” Lucien offered.
“There’s no time for that!” Kaia snapped. “Just go! I don’t need your help check if it’s Harry!”
“Got it!” Lucien scrambled up to the rooftop. Behind a row of laundry lines fluttering in the breeze, he spotted a lone figure standing near the edge. It was Harry.
Lucien approached quickly. “Harry.”
At the sound of his name, Harry whipped around, eyes wide with alarm. “Who are you?” he demanded, taking a nervous step back. “Don’t come any closer!”
Lucien halted and raised both hands in a placating gesture. “Okay, I’m not coming closer. But I need you to walk toward me. The rooftop’s dangerous–just come here, nice and easy.”
Harry shook his head, his eyes vacant and glassy, “No. I’m not moving. I’m not.”
Kaia arrived moments later, breathless, her heart pounding.

“Harry, please don’t do this,” she pleaded. Her voice trembled.
“Listen to me, Mr. Halston is fine. He told me himself–he just passed out because of his drinking and high blood pressure. It had nothing to do with you!”
“No! It was my fault!” Harry cried, his face twisted in anguish.
“If it wasn’t, then why are all those people online saying such awful things about me?”
His eyes turned red, filling with tears. “Ms. Domont, you don’t understand. The things they said were vile. They messaged me— called me a monster. They cursed my family.”
“I only have my mom left,” he choked out, voice breaking.
“I let her down. She worked so hard to put me through college. If she hadn’t sacrificed so much, maybe she wouldn’t have gotten cancer.”
He clutched his head, his grief boiling over. “Do you think… do you think if she saw what people are saying about me online, she’d feel ashamed of me?”
Kaia’s pulse raced as he took a step closer to the edge.
“No!” she shouted, cutting through the storm in his mind. “She wouldn’t! Harry, your mother loves you. You’re the pride of her life. If something happened to you, who would she have left?

“Those people online? They’re full of garbage. Their words don’t matter. You matter. Please, just listen to me.
“Mr. Halston already posted a public statement. I’ve hired someone to remove all the negative comments. It’s going to be okay.”
She stepped forward and extended a hand toward him. “Come here. Take my hand.”
But Kaia’s words didn’t reach him—if anything, they made things worse.
“No! I’m not coming! You’re just like the rest of them!” Harry shouted.
“You ride around in fancy cars, live in luxury. You’ll never understand how hard it is for people like me!”
He was trembling, standing one misstep away from tragedy.
Kaia forced herself to stay calm. She took a slow breath, grounding her voice.
“I do understand, Harry, I envy you, you know? You have a mom who always believed in you. Mine died when I was still a child.
“After she passed, my dad married someone new. A stepmother.

You know what that’s like? Not the wicked kind from fairy tales. Worse. The kind who kills you slowly, quietly–who drives a wedge between you and your own father while smiling to your face.
“I lost my mom and at the same time, I lost my dad too. But your mom, she’s still here. She chose you. She believed in you.
“I know how hard law school is. I know what it’s like to want to escape a life you never chose. I made mistakes too. I got yelled at. I was humiliated. But the darker the road, the brighter the light at the end, right?”
She took another step closer. Her voice cracked. “Harry, you’re your mother’s light.”
That broke him. Harry sank to his knees, sobbing uncontrollably. “But I’m useless. I failed her…”
While Kaia spoke, Lucien had quietly moved around the side, eyes narrowed in focus. In one swift motion, he lunged forward and wrapped his arms around Harry’s waist, yanking him back from the edge.
But it happened too fast. Harry, startled and wearing slippers, stumbled awkwardly as he landed on safe ground. In the process, his foot accidentally caught Lucien square in the chest.
Lucien lost his balance. The rooftop’s edge was only inches away. Kaia lunged toward him, but it was too late.

touched his lips. “Don’t cry, Kaia,” he said softly. “I like it better when you smile.”
Then Kaia heard a sickening thud.
“No!” Kaia’s hand grasped at empty air as she watched him fall. Her mind went blank, her heart caving in.
No. Please don’t… Lucien couldn’t die.
