Tobias squinted at the man before him, a nagging sense of familiarity tugging at his mind, though he was certain they’d
never met.
The stranger carried himself with an air of authority, his piercing gaze sharp enough to cut through steel. He looked a few years older than Tobias.
Tobias believed if he had ever encountered this man before, he’d never have forgotten it.
And yet… there was something hauntingly familiar.
“I’m Malcolm Vane,” the man said, his voice low and deliberate. “I’m Lillian’s older brother.”
Tobias‘ breath caught, his eyes widening as if a storm had erupted inside him.
Lillian’s brother?
Lillian had always insisted she had no family loft.
Where had this man come from?
Malcolm Vane’s lips twisted into a cold, mocking grin. “Surprised? Well, brace yourself, because I’ve got something

even more shocking for you.
“Your company’s on the brink of collapse, isn’t it? That was my doing. Are you enjoying the spectacle?
“I’m here to make you pay for what you did to Lillian.”
Tobias stumbled back, his heart pounding with dread. “No, you’ve got it all wrong! Lillian was my wife. She died of illness!”
The more Tobias studied Malcolm, the more his fear grew.
The resemblance was uncanny–Malcolm’s features echoed Lillian’s so closely it was chilling.
This man was undeniably her brother.
Malcolm’s voice surged, raw with fury. “Illness? You think Lillian’s depression just happened? Tell me, Tobias, why did she spiral? It was because of you! She found out about your affair. You flaunted your affair at the company, right where she
could see! It killed her!
“Bankruptcy is just the start, Tobias. Lillian’s suffering? I’ll make you pay for it tenfold–no, a hundredfold!”
“No!” Tobias voice cracked, desperation seeping through. “t didn’t know! It was Sally’s doing! She’s the one who tampered with Lillian’s modication. She’s in prison now. You should go
after her!”

“Tampered?” Malcolm’s face twisted with rage, his eyes blazing. “You mean she didn’t die from illness? You deliberately poisoned her?”

Kaia stepped out of the courthouse when her phone buzzed with a call from the hospital.
“Hello, is this Kaia? Are you Tobias‘ daughter?” the voice on the other end asked.
Kaia’s brow furrowed. “Yes, I’m his daughter.”
“Your father’s had a stroke. He’s in critical condition and being prepped for surgery. Please come to the hospital as soon as possible.”
A stroke?
Could it be because of the company’s collapse?
Her heart didn’t ache for him, not really. With a calm detachment, she drove toward the hospital.
Just then, Lucien’s call came through.
“Heading back to the law firm?” he asked, his tone warm and casual. “If not, where do you want to grab dinner tonight?”

Kaia cut him off gently, “I don’t have time tonight. My dad’s in the hospital. I’m on my way there now.”
“Which hospital? Send me the address. I’ll meet you there.”
Kaia and Lucien arrived at the hospital almost simultaneously.
Kaia hurried to the emergency room, where a doctor approached her.
“Are you Tobias‘ daughter?
“Your father’s condition is critical. He needs surgery immediately. Please sign here.”
Kaia’s hand moved mechanically as she signed the forms, her mind flickering with a dark, fleeting thought.
What if he never makes it out of that operating room? Maybe that would be best for everyone.
The thought vanished as quickly as it came.
She stood abruptly. “I need to use the restroom.”
Lucien, assuming she was shaken and needed a moment to collect herself, started to rise.
“I’ll come with you.”

“No, stay here,” she said softly. “I’ll be right back.”

In the bathroom, Kaia splashed cold water on her face, the shock of it grounding her.
Staring into the mirror, she barely recognized the woman looking back–her features familiar yet distant, like a stranger wearing her skin.
When she returned, she tucked away her swirling emotions and sank into the chair beside Lucien in the waiting area.
“Lucien, thank you,” she murmured, her voice soft but steady.
Lucien’s lips pressed into a thin line, his expression serious. “About your dad’s company… It wasn’t just me.
“I started it, but someone else took over and pushed it further.”
Kaia’s brows knitted together. “What do you mean? Someone else wanted his company to tank?”
Lucien nodded, then dropped another bombshell,
“I have a pretty good guess who it was.”
Her eyes narrowed. “Who?”
“Mr. Vane–the man who sent that card to our wedding.”

He looked at her gently and added, “Honey, your mother’s maiden name was also Vane.”

The realization hit her like a thunderclap. This was her mother’s family.
Kaia’s breath hitched. “But…”
Lillian’s diary had been clear: she had cut ties with her family
years ago.
Though her words often carried a quiet longing for them, they’d had no contact in decades.
So why now? Why after all these years?
Lucien slipped an arm around her shoulders, his touch gentle but steady. “While you were gone, I spoke to your family’s butler. He said a middle–aged man with the last name Vane showed up at the house this morning.
“They had a heated argument. Right after, your dad was rushed to the hospital.”
Kaia’s mind raced as the pieces finally clicked into place. So this was it–her mother’s family had come for revenge.
Tears welled up, spilling over before she could stop them. A quiet sob broke free, her heart aching with a strange mix of

sorrow and relief.
Mom… you see? There’s still someone in this world who remembers you.
