Even over text, Kaia could sense his mood.

She stifled a laugh and hit the call button. It rang several times before the line connected.
“Hello?”
That low, smooth voice–familiar and unmistakably his—made her chest tighten.
She smiled softly. “Honey, I miss you. Do you miss me?”
His tone was dry. “No. Are you sure you miss me? It’s been three weeks. Not a single call. That’s what you call missing someone?”
Kaia could hear the hurt laced beneath the sarcasm.
“I’m sorry,” she said gently. “I’ve just been so busy. And with the time difference, I didn’t want to bother you.”
She paused, then added with a touch of mischief, “Besides, you’re the one who told me not to call. Don’t tell me you’re going back on your word?”
Lucien fell quiet for a moment, clearly cornered. “No. I’m not. Everything’s fine.“/
Kaia smirked. “Alright, then. How about this–I’ll call you once a

week from now on. Sounds good?”
“…Alright.”

Truthfully, once a week sounded like too little. Lucien wanted more. But thinking back to his dramatic declarations before she left, he figured he’d better keep his mouth shut.
Kaia kept chatting, rambling on about everything. Mostly, it was her voice filling the line while Lucien quietly listened.
Eventually, she glanced at the time and reluctantly ended the call. Then she stayed up working until 2 a.m.

Five months after Kaia left, Luna gave birth.
Since the baby needed to return for legal documentation, Lucien had agreed to let her deliver back home.
Alden, however, was still in Africa and couldn’t make it back in
time.
Joanne and Zane beamed as they looked at the baby sleeping in his bassinet. “He’s such a beautiful child. Big eyes, like a little doll.” Joanne gushed.
Luna’s pregnancy had been a tense one,

She’d spent months worrying the baby would come out looking too foreign. That would expose everything.
Fortunately, the baby inherited mostly her features. His face didn’t look much like hers, but the overall impression leaned toward “mixed–race cutie“. Whenever someone commented on how exotic the baby looked, she would just smile and say, “That’s because Alden has such striking features.”
Joanne and Zane exchanged glances. What Luna said made sense, so they didn’t question it any further.
Luna had given birth right around Christmas. She posted an X update saying she’d given birth safely—just so Kaia would see it.
But Kaia barely had time to breathe, let alone scroll through posts. She had six months left in her program, and her coursework was drowning her.
What used to be weekly calls with Lucien had dwindled to once a
month.
She made a small pot of pasta, sat down with her laptop, and kept working on a case analysis.
The next morning, she saw it–the first message he had sent her, unprompted, in half a year. Lucien messaged: [Merry Christmas.]
Only then did Kaia realize six months had already passed.

Her eyes softened into a smile. She replied: [Merry Christmas, Lucien!]
Lucien stared out at the falling snow. There were still six months
to go–one hundred eighty–five days. And he wasn’t sure he could wait that long.
Alyssa missed Kaia terribly. In January, she called her overseas, “Kaia! Happy New Year!”
Kaia gave a small, tired smile. “Happy New Year to you, too!”
“I’ve got something to tell you.”
Kaia didn’t notice how hesitant Alyssa sounded. “What is it, Alyssa? I’m listening.”
Alyssa’s earlobes flushed pink. “I’m pregnant. Just hit the one–month mark. You’re the first person I’m telling.”
Kaia blinked, momentarily stunned. Then she broke into a warm smile. “Congratulations! Alyssa, you’re going to be a mom!”
Alyssa smiled shyly, hand instinctively resting over her belly, still amazed it was real.
Kaia asked, “You told me first? You haven’t told Landon yet?”
Alyssa gave a huff. “He’s been sulking for no reason lately. He

even moved into the hospital dorms. Fine, let him stay there! See if I care!”
“Alyssa, don’t be mad. If there’s a misunderstanding, just talk it out. Don’t stress. It’s not good for the baby.”
“I know. I just… I needed someone to tell. And I thought of you. Kaia, you’ll be back in six months, right?”
“Yeah. Don’t worry, Alyssa. Call me whenever you need.”
“Kaia, you sound so tired. Are you okay?”
Kaia hesitated. “Yeah, just a little worn out. You get some rest, Alyssa. Talk soon, okay?”
She hung up.
Kaia had been burning with fever for days. It was a foggy blur of aching limbs, a spinning head, and a constant chill. Her roommate had asked several times if she wanted to go to the hospital.
Kaia stared at the thermometer. “No need. It should break by
tomorrow.”
After taking medication, her high fever had dropped to a low one, but her mind was still foggy, her body weak. She hadn’t expected her first illness abroad to hit this hard.

She wanted to call Lucien. But she imagined what he’d say, “See? I told you not to go. You can’t even handle being sick.”
So she didn’t call. She held out.

Being sick in a foreign country made her feel especially alone.
Sometimes, when the dizziness let up, she’d pull out their wedding photo and stare at it. She didn’t know how many times she’d cried.
But this was her choice. No matter how hard it got, she had to see it through.

Meanwhile, Lucien sat in his office, his expression unreadable, fingers tapping lightly on his phone screen.
Kaia should’ve been in class by now. The people he had secretly arranged to watch over her had all gone home for the holidays. Right now, he had no idea how she was doing.
After a long moment of contemplation, Lucien gave in, He picked up the phone and called her for the first time.
Kaia was too out of it to even hear the phone ringing.
Her roommate, already worried, had been debating whether to call an ambulance. She glanced over at Kaia’s blanket, where her

She hesitated, then picked it up. “Hello? Are you Kaia’s

Lucien’s chest tightened.
