Luna figured it was time to head back as dawn’s first light crept over the horizon.
She was filthy and reeked of sweat. To make her kidnapping story believable, she’d scratched up her arms, making herself look like she’d been through hell.
She fished three hundred bucks from her pocket–cash she’d prepared in advance–and flagged down a taxi.
The driver wrinkled his nose, barely hiding his disgust. “Miss, you smell like you crawled out of a dumpster.”
Luna bit back her irritation, her voice tight. “I just escaped from kidnappers. Please, just get me home quick.”
“Kidnappers? For real?” he snorted, skeptical. “They just let you waltz away? Maybe I should drop you off at a psych ward instead.”
Luna endured his taunts, clenching her jaw until they pulled up to the gates of the Graves Manor.
She was a dollar short for the fare.
“What, you live in a mansion like this and can’t cough up a single buck?” the driver scoffed, eyeing her filthy appearance.

Luna’s face darkened, the dirt on her cheeks making her scowl even uglier.
“Wait here. I’ll get a dollar from the staff.”
She pounded on the gate, her knocks echoing unanswered. The heavy doors stayed shut, indifferent to her pleas.
Tears of frustration welled up as she banged harder.
“Open the gate! It’s me, Luna! I’m back–I escaped!”
Silence was her only reply.
The driver, fed up with the smell and now stiffed a dollar, spat on the ground.
“What a piece of work!”
With a cloud of exhaust, he peeled away, leaving her stranded.
Luna kept shouting, her voice hoarse, until the gate finally creaked open. Dylan Williams, the butler, stepped out, his face grim.
Luna glared at him, exasperated. “What took you so long to open the gate?”
Dylan didn’t answer. Instead, he hefted a large bag and tossed it outside the gate,

“Ms. Thorne, here’s your stuff. Take it and go before Mr. Alden Graves sees you. He’s not in the mood.”
Luna’s jaw dropped. “Dylan, are you out of your mind? I’m Luna -Alden’s wife!”
Alden appeared behind Dylan, his face like stone as he flung a divorce agreement at her feet.
“As of today, you’re not. Sign it if you know what’s good for you. If you don’t, I’ll make sure we’re done anyway.”
Luna froze, her mind reeling.
“Alden, what’s wrong with you? I’m your wife–I’m Luna!”
He stepped back as she reached for him, his voice dripping with disgust. “Don’t touch me. You’re filthy.”
He leaned closer, his eyes burning with betrayal. “Did you think about being my wife when you had your fling with that foreigner? When you made a fool of me?
“Luna, you’re worse than a sewer rat. You make my skin crawl.”
The memory of every kind gesture he’d ever shown her twisted in his gut, turning to nausea.
Joanne hadn’t planned to get involved, but her anger boiled

She stormed forward and slapped Luna hard, twice, the sharp cracks echoing.
“You have the nerve to show your face here? You’ve humiliated my son! You ungrateful snake!
“Luna, what did this family ever do to you to deserve this? You’re nothing but a backstabbing leech!”
Still fuming, Joanne landed two more slaps, her hands trembling with rage.
“Get lost. I never want to see you or hear your name again!”
Luna stood there, shell–shocked, her cheeks swollen and stinging.
“How did this happen…”
How did they know?
As the gates of the Graves Manor slammed shut, Luna felt her world collapse. This was the end of everything.
With a dull thud, she crumpled to the ground.
When she came to in the hospital, the doctor’s words hit her like a lifeline. “You’re pregnant.”

“Lend me a phone–I need to call my husband!”
She had to tell Alden the news.

If he knew she was carrying his child, surely he’d forgive her past mistakes.
But before she could dial, a police officer stepped into the room.
His gaze was cold and professional. “Are you Luna Thorne? You’ve been accused of child abandonment.”
Luna’s voice was shrill with denial. “That’s not true!”
“We have a witness who saw you abandon the child and evidence you faked your own kidnapping. What do you have to say for yourself?”
Luna’s heart sank, her voice trembling. “Who? Who’s framing me? Officer, you have to believe me–I’m innocent!”
“I’m the one who saw it!” Tony stood in the doorway, cradling the child, his eyes blazing with contempt.
“I watched you ditch that kid, you venomous woman. What do you have to say for yourself?

“I’m taking my child back and I’ll raise him myself. You’ll never touch him again.”
Even the “kidnapper” she’d paid off turned on her, stepping in with a sneer. “She hired me to stage the whole thing!”
The evidence was undeniable.
Luna had no defense left.
She slumped on the hospital bed, her limbs ice–cold. The thought of spending her life in prison sent a chill of despair through her.
Then she remembered her trump card.
“I’m pregnant! You can’t arrest me!”
The officer sighed, clearly frustrated. She got good timing.
“Get yourself a lawyer.”
The hospital room was under police watch. She begged to borrow a phone–her own had long been discarded.
When Alden’s voice came through, cold and distant, her heart sank. “Hello.”
“Alden, it’s Luna–please, don’t hang up! I have something to tell you….
