Chapter 67 As if he’d seen a ghost
After meeting Tobias, Kaia made her way to the law firm.
It wasn’t until the afternoon, amidst her busy work, that she noticed Lucien had called.
She stepped into the pantry to return his call.
In the meeting room, Lucien, as cold as ice, thawed at the sight of her name on his phone. “Hold on a second. I’ll take this call,” he said, rising from his seat.
Frank looked as if he’d seen a ghost. Since when did their CEO step out during a meeting to answer a call? It was unheard of!
The executives exchanged bewildered glances. Was there some kind of emergency?
Once outside the meeting room, Lucien couldn’t help the smile tugging at his lips. His voice came out softer than he intended, with an unmistakable trace of affection.
“My girlfriend finally checked her phone, huh?”
Kaia felt heat rush to her ears.
Girlfriend?
Since when had they become a couple?
At best, they were pretending.
She cleared her throat, trying to mask her flustered state. “I was swamped this afternoon and didn’t get the chance. What’s up?”
“Nothing much,” Lucien said, casually leaning against a wall. “Just wanted to check if my girlfriend had lunch.”
Kaia blinked, thrown off by his easy concern. “I had a salad.”
Lucien paused. “…Are you on a diet?”
She frowned slightly. “No. Why?”
“Then why are you eating something only a cat would eat?”
Kaia was left speechless.
Just then, Jude walked up and started, “Kaia, Warren’s going to handle that infringement case tomorrow. Can you swing by Ease Electronics again-”
He stopped short, noticing the phone in her hand.
“Oh-sorry, didn’t realize you were on a call. I’ll wait.”
Kaia’s heart skipped a beat. She covered the phone, afraid Jude
might find out who she was talking to. She felt inexplicably guilty.
“Sure, Jude. I’ll come to you later,” she said.
Jude noticed her being all mysterious and gave her a knowing
smile.
Well, well, she’s really quick at switching boyfriends. Impressive!
After flashing her an OK sign, Jude turned around and walked
away.
Kaia let out a sigh of relief and whispered, “Lucien, are you still there?”
Her soft voice sent a flutter through his heart.
“Yeah. Your boss needs you. Go ahead and get back to work.”
“Okay, I’m going.”
Lucien stared at the screen after the call ended, a quiet smile gracing his lips.

Sally told the servants to pack her things and asked her
daughter to pack some of her regular clothes and daily-use
items.
Kimberly got more and more annoyed as she was halfway through packing.
Finally, she whipped out her phone and called Luna. “Luna, You got any free time?”
Luna gave her a sweet smile. “Sure. It’s been ages, Kimberly. How about going out for a meal together?”
That was exactly what Kimberly had in mind.
*****
At the restaurant, Luna bit her lip, looking incredulous. “You’re saying your dad agreed to Kaia’s request and kicked you and your mom out of the house?”
“Yeah! Luna, tell me what kind of spell she cast on Dad to make him treat us like this!” Kimberly fumed.
Luna fell into thought.
She knew Tobias well. He was a refined egoist and a shrewd businessman.
As a father and a merchant, he wouldn’t spoil his daughter
unconditionally.
After Kaia broke off the engagement with Alden, she should have been a useless pawn in his eyes.
But if he was now so protective of her, there was only one possibility: she had become useful again!
Luna then asked, “Kimberly, has Kaia got a new boyfriend? Or rather, a rich one.”
Kimberly frowned in disdain. “Her? Come on! She broke off with Alden. Who would be stupid enough to take her?”
Luna didn’t like the sound of that.
She was confident of her place in Alden’s heart and knew he wouldn’t do anything to Kaia.
But she didn’t mind bad-mouthing that annoying Kaia. “Well, some old guys might just be into her type.”
Suddenly, it dawned on Kimberly.
So that’s why Tobias was helping Kaia. She’d hooked up with an old rich guy!
“Kimberly, don’t be so hasty,” Luna said gently. “I heard Kaia’s law firm just landed the investment and merger project from
headquarters. I happen to be on good terms with the person in charge.”
She smiled delicately. “How about I invite her out for a meal sometime?”
Kimberly’s eyes lit up instantly. “Perfect! Can you set it up for tomorrow? I’ll cover everything.”
If Kaia wanted to act high and mighty, then fine-Kimberly would make sure her work life hit a wall, hard.
