Anneliese’s chest felt tight, her nerves humming in a way she could not put into words.
“I have to leave town later today. I’ll be gone for a few days. That means we should get the license as soon as possible.”
Jonathan finally explained once they were seated inside the car. His hand never left. Anneliese’s, his grip firm.
So that was the reason.
Anneliese gave a quick nod and checked the time on her phone.
“My documents are all at Maple Bay. If I stop by to grab them, we should reach city hall right as it opens.”
Jonathan shifted his gaze toward Zion, who sat frozen in the driver’s seat like a statue. “Drive.”
Zion’s pulse pounded so hard it shook his hands on the wheel.
So, he did it. Mr. Fullbuster did it. His sche… plan worked.
He just dup… won a woman’s heart without much effort, and now she’s becoming his wife, he thought.
He had guessed his boss was planning something, yet now he was the one driving him straight to pick up a marriage license, and the weight of that truth left him dizzy.
“Alright. Driving.”
He steadied himself, pressed down on the gas too hard, and the car lunged forward with a violent jolt.
Anneliese pitched toward the dash, but Jonathan caught her in an instant, wrapping her against his chest. His arm never loosened, as if she belonged there and nowhere else.
The scene turns to Maple Bay,
The elevator doors opened with a soft chime, and the light spilled over them as they reached
her floor.
Anneliese stepped forward, but Jonathan’s grip remained unyielding, guiding her along as if
her hand were a tether.

She paused in surprise and turned to him.
“Thought you were going to get your papers?”

Jonathan’s stance made it clear he intended to follow her right through her front door, as though watching her collect them was his duty.
“My papers are in the car.”
He said it without a pause, already stepping out of the elevator beside her.
Anneliese blinked at him in disbelief. He really was coming with her to collect her papers.
It felt as though he suspected she might run, and his way of preventing that was to stay close enough to shadow her every move.
No, it had to be her imagination.
But then she remembered Jessica was at home. If Jonathan came inside with her, Jessica would know instantly that they were heading for a license.
Anneliese did not want Jessica’s mind spinning with worry.
And with Jessica’s fiery temper, knowing the truth might spark a reaction Anneliese had no desire to face.
She tightened her hold on Jonathan’s hand. “Wait. Just give me a second.”
He stopped, his eyes narrowing as his gaze pressed down on her like a storm rolling in.
“You planning to run?”
His voice was low and sharp, and it made her feel as though even a nod would slice her in two.
She shook her head quickly, then rushed out words with sudden clarity.
“No. I only want to grab my papers, change clothes, and put on some makeup. Do you want to take a moment to freshen up too?”
Jonathan studied her, his lips curving with the faintest hint of a smile. “You take this that seriously?”
Heat crawled up her neck and across her cheeks, yet she lifted her chin with a flicker of pride.
“Even if it’s only a marriage of convenience, it’s still a marriage license. You can’t ignore the

sense of ceremony, can you?”
“Of course not.” Jonathan gave a slow nod.

At last, he let her hand slip free. He slid both hands into his pockets and stepped back.
The elevator light bathed him in gold, outlining his tall figure. His eyes were dark as night and seemed to hold an entire universe within them.
“Go ahead. I’m not rushing you. I’ll wait in the car.”
Anneliese’s heart thudded too fast, and she nodded before nearly running out of the elevator.
Inside the apartment, Jessica was curled on the couch, her legs crossed as she watched a reality show.
“I thought you weren’t coming back for lunch. And why’s your face so flushed?”
Anneliese slipped off her shoes and headed toward her bedroom. “I just came to grab something. I’ll be out again soon. Did that creep show up this morning?”
