The door slammed with a crack that rattled through the hallway, the echo rolling off the walls until the air finally stilled again.
Anneliese descended the stairs, each step carrying her toward the sight she knew would be waiting. Jonathan was there, just as she expected.
He stood by the sleek car, tall and composed, his hand reaching to open the door for her himself. She noticed right away that he had changed.
Earlier, he had worn a dark shirt that was sharp and severe. Now he wore a pristine white shirt tucked neatly into black dress pants. Not a thread was out of place. He looked like a man carved out of restraint and polish, his presence steady yet commanding, his aura so refined it caught and held the eye without asking permission.
She lowered her gaze to her own outfit, a soft white sweater paired with a flowing black skirt. For a fleeting second, it felt as though their looks had been planned in unison, as though fate itself had dressed them to match.
Jonathan’s eyes fell on her, steady and unflinching, carrying a weight that seemed almost tangible. Her hand closed tighter on the strap of her bag as she forced herself to step forward.
“Do I look alright?”
His brow lifted ever so slightly. “You look beautiful. What about me?”
Her lips parted into a small smile. “You look good too, Mr. Fullbuster. Handsome.”
Laughter brushed between them, light and fleeting, before she bent to climb into the car.
Jonathan lowered the door into place, circled around with measured steps, and slid into the driver’s seat. From the front passenger side, Zion turned with a grin stretched wide across his face.
“Mr. Fullbuster and Ms. Claude, you two look like you belong together. Your wedding pictures are going to be gorgeous. And guess what? I checked earlier. Today’s supposed to be the Juckiest day of the season to get married. If you tie the knot now, your marriage will be full of happiness, long lasting, and with kids coming sooner rather than later.”
Heat rushed to Anneliese’s checks. Her lashes fluttered as her whole body stiffened.
Zion had no idea that her marriage to Jonathan was nothing more than a contract signed on
paper.

Her lips pressed tight, ready to cut him off, but Jonathan’s hand moved first, tapping the back of his seat with a quiet thud.
“If you’re after a wedding gift, just admit it.”
Zion’s eyes brightened. “Guilty as charged.”
It was the perfect day to ask, and he knew it.
A wedding gift from the boss was a sure sign of good fortune.
Jonathan’s mouth curved faintly. “Your bonus this month will be doubled.”
“Thank you, Mr. Fullbuster. Thank you, Mrs. Fullbuster.”
Zion’s grin only grew as he turned his gaze toward Anneliese, eyes glinting with amusement.
In the back of his mind, he was already planning to ask later if “double” really meant sixfold or even eightfold.
Knowing Mr. Fullbuster’s habit of scheming and wrestling his way into victory, and now managing to secure a wife, such a rare occasion couldn’t possibly end with something as small as double.
Anneliese’s throat closed suddenly, and she choked hard on her own breath.
Jonathan’s eyes flicked toward Zion, sharp and warning, before his hand moved to her back, patting gently.
She waved him off, raising her chin to show she was fine.
Then she leaned closer, her lips almost brushing his ear as she whispered low.
“We’re only married on paper. Why didn’t you tell Mr. Harland the truth?”
Jonathan slipped an arm around her shoulder, pulling her slightly in. His mouth lowered until his words stirred against the curve of her ear,
“He would talk. If we’re going to fool my family, then we have to fool everyone else too. To the world outside, we are a real couple, one that’s very much in love.”
His breath was warm against her skin, his voice pitched low, and it sent à ripple straight through her nerves.
Anneliese realized in that moment just how close they were sitting.

Close enough to look like lovers caught in secret whispers before a wedding.

Her chest tightened. She held her breath, nodded faintly, and then leaned back just enough to put space between them. “Alright. I get it.”
Zion’s words about today being the perfect day for marriage stayed with her, and she found herself worried that the office would be swamped with couples.
But Jonathan had prepared ahead of time.
They were ushered straight through, and everything moved swiftly and without delay.
In less than five minutes, the license was resting in her hands.
When they stepped outside, she gripped the marriage license, her legs weak beneath her, as if the ground had turned light and unsteady.
It was almost impossible to believe that in only one week she had finalized a divorce and signed into a marriage.
One trip into City Hall, then one trip out, and she had a new husband.
Even if the marriage was nothing more than a contract, the speed of it was dizzying.
