“Thanks for your kindness, Gianna, but it’s just a meal. I think if the investor chose our lab, then our ideas must match, and our personalities fit. He shouldn’t make things hard for us without reason. Don’t you think so, Gianna?”
Gianna hit a wall but quickly smiled again. “You’re right, I was overthinking. I was only worried you’d be nervous since it’s your first time going out to an event with us. I forgot you’ve already left school and worked for years. Handling something like this must be easy for you.”
Anneliese glanced at Gianna and stayed silent.
She could feel the subtle digs and hostility from Gianna ever since they met at the airport.
But since she joined halfway through, it was normal for Gianna to have thoughts and opinions. Anneliese did not take it to heart.
They would spend a lot of time together in the lab later. She didn’t want to cause conflict right after joining and make things hard for Alexander.
Anneliese did not speak, but Clement, who walked beside them, heard the exchange.
He patted Anneliese’s shoulder and said, “Anne, don’t be polite with Gianna. The investor supports us not only because of the lab’s strength but also because of her connections. If things get tough later, just let her help you out.”
Anneliese looked at Clement. She knew his personality well.
He was kind and focused only on research. He was straightforward and never played mind games. He probably hadn’t noticed the tension between her and Gianna.
She smiled. “Then thank you,
Gianna.”
Gianna curved her brows and eyes, looking harmless. “Why so polite with me, Anneliese?”
The group was led by a waiter into a private dining room.
By coincidence, it turned out to be the same room where Anneliese had eaten with Jonathan
last time.
The investor had not arrived yet. Anneliese sat inside, and scenes from the last meal here with Jonathan flashed in her mind. A strange feeling rose in her chest.
The thought made her heartbeat speed up.

She pulled out her phone, opened WhatsApp, and went to her chat with Jonathan. After thinking for a moment, she sent him a message, ‘What are you doing?‘
His reply came fast. Before entering the room, she had already set her phone to silent.
She had just locked the screen when it lit up again, ‘In a meeting.‘
Seeing his reply, Anneliese told herself she was indeed overthinking.
‘Then focus on your meeting,‘ she replied shortly.
She thought he wouldn’t answer, but another message popped up right away, ‘Miss me?‘
The teasing words made her breathing falter.
“What’s got you so focused, Anne? Must be something good.” Quinton’s voice sounded beside her as he leaned in to peek at her phone.
Her ears turned hot. Feeling guilty, she quickly put her phone away.
She turned to join her seniors‘ chat. After just a few sentences, the door opened. Annelies with her back to it, so she didn’t see, but Alexander and the seniors stopped talking and stood
At the same time, Anneliese felt a warm gaze settle on her.
She quickly stood too and turned her head.
Her eyes met the tall figure walking in. She saw his expression shift as he watched hers go from blank to surprise to joyful. Her lips parted little by little in shock. In his dark eyes, it was like ripples spread across a calm lake.
