Jonathan caught her wrist as Anneliese tried to leave. She turned her head, confused, and met his dark eyes glinting with amusement.
“Baby, that kiss was way too half–hearted,” he murmured.
He drew her into his arms and captured her lips, lush and irresistible, without giving her a chance to protest. He began with a few gentle pecks, savoring her soft lips, but impatience broke through as he slipped his tongue between her lips, their hot breaths mingling.
Her knees buckled and her waist weakened until she could hardly support herself. He was so tall that even when he bent low to reach her, her back ached and her neck strained, barely able to stand. She was practically hanging off his arm, her small hands clutching his shirt and wrinkling it.
She was gasping for air by the time he released her. Jonathan brushed a stray strand of hair behind her ear and stated with his husky voice laced with teasing, “Just a couple of kisses and you’re out of breath? Your stamina is pathetic. You’re coming with me to work out in the mornings starting tomorrow.”
She was momentarily speechless.
She thought, He said the same thing last night. But honestly, he just has way too much energy! I’ve never realized that being a pilot meant they had to be incredibly fit.
But Anneliese had always hated working out, so she immediately pushed him away and replied, “No way!”
“Nope, not happening. If you keep this up, I’m afraid you’ll end up passing out in my bed next time.” He brushed his knuckle against her nose with a teasing smile
He thought to himself, Most importantly, she really needs to start exercising. She’s healthy now, but only because she is young. Once she throws herself into the lab, she’ll be pulling days–long stretches without rest. Her body definitely can’t keep up.
Anneliese scrunched her delicate brows, her cheeks puffing adorably as she tilted her head in mock outrage. “Jonathan Fullbuster! I can’t believe you’re this kind of man!”
“What did I do?” Jonathan inquired.
“You actually dare to ask? Ugh, you have no self–control at all! Always chasing after beauty without a second thought. Just to satisfy yourself, you want me to suffer! And don’t even try to pretend otherwise–I know you think I’m not good enough. Don’t even try to deny it—you

totally think I’m not good!” Anneliese placed her hands firmly on her hips, glaring at him.
Before Jonathan could defend himself, she rattled off a whole list of accusations.
Finally, Anneliese gave him a last shove, declared him guilty, and started off. Jonathan stood frozen for a beat before striding after her. He swept her up into his arms and locked his eyes onto hers.
“Wow, you’ll do anything to get out of working out, huh?” he insisted.
She wasn’t truly angry; she was just being dramatic, trying to stay one step ahead so he wouldn’t drag her out of bed at dawn. Still, heat rushed to her cheeks, and this time her fluster was real. She squirmed against his hold, and her legs kicked in a futile protest as his arms kept her securely close to him.
“Who says I’m only acting this way to avoid working out? I’m mad–truly mad! Can’t you see it? You don’t care about my feelings or my happiness at all. All you ever think about is looks–and that one thing!” Her pout deepened with spoiled defiance, and her almond–shaped eyes
shimmered with unshed tears, wide and luminous until she looked heartbreakingly adorable and utterly impossible to resist.
A deep, velvety laugh escaped him, rumbling from his chest in a way that was far too tempting to ignore. He carried her over to the couch and sat down with her.
Anneliese’s cheeks flamed hotter beneath the sound of his laughter, irritation sparking in her chest. In a huff, she wriggled off his lap onto the cushions beside him, seized his ears between her hands, and glared up at him. “You’re still laughing? Stop it! You’re not taking me seriously at all!”
At last, Jonathan reined in his smile, his gaze sobering as it fixed on her.
“Alright, alright–I was wrong. I’ll reflect on it. But, baby, I swear you’re accusing me unfairly,” he apologized.
She
gave a sharp little huff, her grip on his ears unrelenting as she lifted her chin with exaggerated grace. “Fine. I’ll give you a chance to defend yourself. Where exactly have you been wronged?”
Jonathan’s voice became deep, smooth, and magnetic. “How could I ever not care about your feelings, about your happiness?”
As he spoke, he leaned closer, brushing soft kisses against her forehead and the corners of her
eyes.
