Anneliese is genuinely hungry, so she kept her head down and ate quietly. At the same time, Jonathan remains close by, attentively caring for her–serving her dishes, pouring soup, peeling shrimp, and topping off her glass without any complaints.
He mentioned what Zion had shared with him after he noticed she was nearly full.
“Calvin is in Falvaria?” She looks up in astonishment. “That explains why the private investigator I hired was never able to locate him…”
He reaches out and takes her hand softly.
In that moment, she realizes how tightly she’s been holding her fork–her knuckles rigid and her fingertips chilled.
“Baby, don’t be afraid,” he whispers. “He will never harm you again. I promise.”
His grip tightens slightly, pulling her into his embrace. A gentle, reassuring kiss rests on her forehead, and with his serious promise, it embeds itself in her heart just as strongly.
She wants to shake her head and express that she isn’t afraid anymore. But the sudden prick at the tip of her nose gives her away, and the words falter before they can escape her lips.
How could she not feel fear?
Even now, simply hearing Calvin’s name is enough to resurrect every piece of that night— images of despair and terror burned into her mind.
She still remembers his sharp, angular eyes and that hideous yellow hair. The other three thugs had followed his lead.
Only when she managed to kick him in desperation did Calvin pull out a knife and thrust it at her with brutal intent.
Later, she forced herself to occupy the victim’s seat at the trial to muster every ounce of courage to meet the gaze of her attackers.
All four of them had cried and pleaded, even attempting to kneel for her forgiveness.

For the first year afterward, nightmares frequently tormented her. Even now, though the

dreams have diminished, walking Meatloaf at night could still give her chills whenever a young man of a similar stature gets too close.
Anneliese has always concealed that fear well.
Even Jessica believed Anneliese had completely moved on from the trauma.
She never anticipated Jonathan would see through her facade easily. She nestled in his arms, feeling the steady and powerful beat of his heart; she couldn’t refrain from curling against his chest like a cat seeking solace.
“If we capture him… does that mean they can reopen the case? Selina will finally face consequences for what she did?” she asked.
“Absolutely,” he replied with an icy tone and unwavering. “She won’t escape justice.”
She inclined her head and playfully brushed her hair against his chin in a lighthearted gesture.
She had intended to speak to Perseus and Christopher herself about the past events. However, before she had the opportunity, Jonathan had already taken significant action on her behalf.
“Thanks, hubby. You’re amazing.” She tilted her face upwards, her eyes radiating warmth.
His large hand moved to cover her gaze. He felt undeserving of the way she regarded him.
He thought, I don’t deserve her, as I’ve failed to protect her.
If only I had returned to the country a few years sooner, or cared just a bit more, she wouldn’t have suffered and endured so much.
And if back then I had fought harder–begged his grandpa a little longer–then it wouldn’t be Zacharias who grew up with her as a childhood friend. It would have been me.
That lunch lasted much longer than usual.
Now that they had truly become lovers, everything between them felt transformed. There was an almost tangible intimacy in their every movement, a closeness embedded in the smallest acts. Even a casual glance seemed magnetic, impossible to turn away from.
Anneliese was internally thankful that Jonathan had requested Mabel to leave early. Otherwise, she would have felt far too shy.
Once the meal concluded, she stood to help clean up. But just as she reached for her dishes, he grasped her wrist.
