The skin on the back of her neck and her calves looked very fair, and her face was smooth and tight, younger than her age. Everything about her gave off an air of being pampered and well cared for.

She sat turned partly away, and even when footsteps sounded behind her, she didn’t bother to look back.

Anneliese stepped forward, her tone polite and warm.

“Mrs. Fullbuster, hello. I’m Anneliese. I was in a rush getting here, but I brought you some flowers. I hope you like them.”

She’d picked up the bouquet at a flower shop on the way.

Even though the call had made it clear Elizabeth probably didn’t like her, Anneliese still made sure to show respect.

Elizabeth only turned when she heard Anneliese’s voice, her gaze landing on the flowers. She instinctively leaned back, a faint crease between her brows.

“Didn’t Jonathan tell you that I have mild pollen allergies?”

The butler hurried over with a handkerchief for Elizabeth.

“Mrs. Fullbuster, please use this for cover. I’ll get rid of the bouquet right away.”

He went to open a nearby window, then came back to Anneliese to take the bouquet, saying,

“Give it to me, Ms. Anneliese. Next time you want to bring a gift, you should really check people’s likes and dislikes first…”

But he noticed that Anneliese hadn’t loosened her grip on the bouquet at all.

He frowned and looked up, only to meet Anneliese’s half–smiling eyes.

Suddenly uneasy, the butler heard Anneliese say coolly, “Mrs. Fullbuster, Jonathan really didn’t mention anything about your pollen allergy. But isn’t it your butler’s job to take care of you? Shouldn’t he know about it?”

She left her words hanging, but the butler’s face already changed, a cold sweat breaking out on his back.

He did know about Elizabeth’s pollen allergy, but it was never severe. As long as she didn’t touch the flowers directly, there was basically no reaction.

He was just thinking that since Elizabeth didn’t like Anneliese, the flowers would just make things awkward and give Elizabeth a chance to put her down.

So when he saw Anneliese carrying the bouquet, he hadn’t stopped her or said anything.

But now that Anneliese had called him out, he was completely trapped.

If he admitted he knew, he’d basically be saying he didn’t care about Elizabeth’s health and was slacking on the job.

If he denied it, then it’d mean he couldn’t even do the basics right. Either way, he lost.

He thought that since Anneliese came from a modest background, she would be intimidated in front of Elizabeth. He expected her to panic when scolded and immediately apologize.

He was sure she’d never dare call him out in front of Elizabeth.

But he’d gotten it totally wrong.

Instead of Elizabeth putting Anneliese in her place, it was Anneliese who’d managed to embarrass Elizabeth a little.

Since he was Elizabeth’s butler, his blunder reflected badly on Elizabeth.

“Mrs. Fullbuster, I … “The butler’s face turned pale.

“You’re a disgrace. Get out.” Elizabeth’s eyes were cold.

“Yes, ma’am.”

He quickly took the bouquet from Anneliese and left, but not before giving Anneliese another look.

Anneliese didn’t care at all. She’d already lived through a failed marriage where she bent over backward to please.

She’d learned firsthand that giving her everything only got her heartache, not love. There was no way she’d make the same mistake twice.

She wasn’t about to put herself through misery or swallow her pride for a mother–in–law.

Her marriage to Jonathan was really just for appearances. She was only there to keep his family
