Anneliese instinctively glanced down, touching the ring with her fingertips, and nodded.

“Yes, Mrs. Fullbuster. Jonathan picked it out.”

Elizabeth gave a slight, unreadable smile. “You two have a contract marriage, don’t you?”

“Excuse me?”

Anneliese hadn’t expected the question and had no idea whether Elizabeth had already learned something or was just guessing. Her heart skipped a beat.

But it was only for a second. She quickly masked her surprise and just looked at Elizabeth, puzzled. “Mrs. Fullbuster, I’m not sure what you mean. Jonathan and I are doing well.”

Whether or not Elizabeth actually knew anything, Anneliese figured there was no way Jonathan would’ve told her.

He’d only married her to keep his family off his back. Besides, Elizabeth’s idea of a match for Jonathan had been someone like Selina.

Anneliese liked to think she didn’t care, but being dismissed like that still left her feeling irritated and stifled.

She forced a little smile. “Actually, Mrs. Fullbuster, you should probably ask Jonathan about that. He was the one who pursued me, and he was the one who proposed. I figure there must be something about me he likes.

“Jonathan’s a great guy, but to be honest, aside from his family background, I don’t think I’m any less than him. As for calling you Mrs. Fullbuster, it’s just about

respect for my elders…”

Anneliese added with a smirk, “Mrs. Fullbuster, I may come from a modest background, but my family taught me plenty about respecting others.”

Elizabeth was clearly irritated by that, her expression going cold.

“My son must be drawn to your sharp tongue and thick skin, or maybe he likes your lack of manners and respect!”

Anneliese’s polite smile faded. “Mrs. Fullbuster, respect works both ways. It’s like a mirror. However you treat others, don’t be surprised if they treat you the same.”

“Jonathan treats me very well. He’s always gentle. When I’m with him, I make sure he feels valued and loved, and I’m definitely not sharp–tongued at all.”

She said it all with a straight face, sounding perfectly sweet.

Elizabeth, on the other hand, felt like she’d tried to punch a pillow, only to find it full of

marbles.

“Well, back when Selina told me about you, I thought she was exaggerating. But now that I’ve met you, I realize she was exactly right.”
