Afraid that Penelope and Derek would find out, Elizabeth took Jonathan back to the hotel and tried to bring his fever down herself. But she gave him the wrong medicine, and little Jonathan ended up in the hospital’s emergency room.
From that point on, things had never been right between them.
Penelope took Anneliese’s hand, speaking with a solemn, heartfelt tone, “It’s my fault for not raising my son right. He never learned how to be a good husband or father, and that’s why things turned out this way.
“Elizabeth never wanted a divorce, but she never tried to get close to Jonathan, either. The truth is, the Fullbuster family was the one who hurt her first, so I can’t really ask much from her. But in the end, it’s Jonathan who’s suffered and paid the price.
“Jonathan’s grandpa was strict with him from the time he was little. Having parents like that wasn’t much different than not having any at all. Actually, maybe it would have been better if he’d had none at all.
“He took over the family business in his early twenties, never really had a chance to just enjoy life. Anne, I know it’s shameless to ask, but could you love him a little more? For Grandma’s sake?”
When Jonathan came downstairs to find Anneliese, Penelope had just stepped out to take a call from an old friend.
Anneliese was still flipping through the photo album, head down. Jonathan sat next to her and pulled her into his arms.
“Enjoying the album?”
Anneliese was so absorbed she didn’t even notice him come in.
Wrapped in his arms, she finally looked up, her eyes bright with a smile.
“They’re great, especially this one!”
She flipped to the very first page, showing a naked photo of him as a baby,
Jonathan was speechless.
He slapped his big hand down over the embarrassing baby picture. “Why would Grandma even show you that?”

That’s so embarrassing!
Anneliese tugged his hand away. “Why hide it? You were cute!”

Jonathan’s eyes darkened, and he whispered in her ear, his tone teasing, “It’s still pretty cute
now.”
Anneliese was about to say he was handsome, not cute. What guy wanted to be called cute, anyway? But then she met his mischievous gaze and got it instantly.
She averted her eyes. “Not cute at all!”
That thing he was hinting at was definitely more dangerous than cute!
Jonathan nipped lightly at her ear. “Anne, you’re being unfair. You’re so biased. It only ever listens to you. When you tease it, you always get the best reaction. How is that not cute?”
Anneliese was left speechless by his bold words. Her cheeks burned, and when she looked up, she noticed Penelope on the terrace, still on the phone but turning toward them. Flustered, she pushed the man away and hurriedly flipped a few pages in the album, pointing at a new photo.
“Hey, have
you been to Baytree? This picture was taken there. That’s actually near my place!”
In the photo, Jonathan was a teenager, maybe 14 or 15. He wore a black tracksuit and a baseball cap, looking cool and a little impatient as he stood on a boat’s bow. Behind him, the clock tower of Baytree was clearly visible.
“You know, I used to play by that river all the time when I was a kid. Maybe we even crossed paths back then! When I look at this photo, you really do seem familiar…”
She had noticed the photo earlier and thought it was such a coincidence. She had to share it with Jonathan. She was happily telling him about it when he suddenly snapped the album shut.
The photo disappeared, and Anneliese turned to look at him in confusion.
Maybe it was just her imagination, but for a split second, she thought she saw something like panic or fear in his eyes.
“What’s wrong?”
“The maid said dinner’s ready. Aren’t you hungry?”
Jonathan glanced toward the door, and Anneliese saw that the maid was indeed coming over.
