Selina could barely breathe watching Anneliese glow with triumph. The sight burned in her chest like acid, made worse by the ruin of her own life.
Her voice lashed out, cutting cold and sharp. “Jonathan was cursed the day he married you. You are selfish. You are heartless. You stain the perfect life he could have had. He will discover the truth. And when he does, I’ll be there. I’ll watch your little joy shatter.”
Anneliese’s heart still carried the warmth of last night with Jonathan. That sweetness turned to fire the moment Selina spat venom on her marriage.
Her hand snapped forward. She gripped Selina’s collar and yanked hard. Selina slammed against the car window, body twisted, her face a mask of disgrace.
Anneliese’s voice was ice. “Selina, if I wanted to end you, it would be as simple as crushing a bug. The only reason you’re still standing is because I refuse to dirty myself. I won’t become as rotten as you. But hear me. Do not test me again. Stop crawling into my life. Stop trying to disgust me. If you don’t, you’ll regret it.”
Her words cracked the air like thunder. Her eyes burned with a cold fire.
She patted Selina’s cheek, sharp and humiliating. Selina’s stomach turned, fear crawling under her skin.
Fear coiled deep, but hate rose with it, thick and choking.
Why did Anneliese get to stand tall? Why did she shine brighter while Selina drowned?
Selina’s eyes flared with fury. Her scream ripped free.
“Anneliese, don’t get so smug. You don’t even know who your parents are! You’re a b*stard, a stray! You don’t deserve to stand over me!”
Anneliese froze. Her grip faltered. “What did you just say?”
Selina tugged at her collar, fixing the fabric. She pressed her hand to her mouth and let mocking laughter spill.
“Oh? Did I say something? You’re the clever one. Why ask me?”
She turned on her heel to leave.
Anneliese ripped free of her seat belt. The car door swung open. She caught Selina’s arm in a grip that shook with fury.
“Say it again! What do you mean, I don’t even know who my parents are?”
Selina saw the color drain from her face. The sight made her pulse race with cruel delight.
Her hand covered her lips as she laughed harder, sharp as glass. “You really don’t know anything. You’re not my father’s daughter. You’re not Melanie’s either. You and the Whites share no blood at all. Isn’t it hilarious?”

Her grin stretched wider as Anneliese staggered under the words. “You fought me all these years for a throne that was never yours. You never belonged. I am the true daughter of the Whites. You are nothing. You have no right to tears or to anger. You’re a b*stard child with no name.”
Anneliese’s face paled until every trace of color vanished.
Her mind roared with a hollow thunder. She could barely hear the rest.
She was not the daughter of the Whites. This was something she never expected to hear.
The gene bank had matched. The paternity test with Timothy had confirmed it.
How could this be false?
If she was not theirs, then who was she?
What had the years of cruelty and injustice meant?
It was absurd. It was cruel. It was madness.
She gripped Selina’s arm, her voice breaking. “You’re lying. You are lying to me.”
Selina sneered. “Why would I lie? I’ll give you proof.”
She tore her arm free and walked to her car.
Anneliese shut her eyes. She already knew. Selina had no reason to invent this.
The Whites were ruined. There was nothing to gain.
Selina pulled a document from the seat and shoved it into her hands. “Look with your own eyes.”
Anneliese lowered her gaze. Her name was there beside Timothy’s. Her stomach lurched. She remembered the last time Selina had pressed her. The taunts. The tension. Now it was clear. Selina had wanted her hair.
