Chris had been the first Stone family bodyguard Natalie had ever met–and the first person from that family to show her any genuine kindness. Maybe he’d only done it because he was on their payroll, but Natalie never forgot how he’d helped her.
Baron glanced at Waylon without speaking.
Chris was, after all, part of the Stone family. Whether or not the Stones cared about what happened to him, Baron did–because that man had risked his life to protect Natalie. Still, Baron wanted to give the family the chance to take the lead on this.
Waylon immediately caught his silence and understood.
The more he saw, the more satisfied he became with his son–in–law.
He smiled and said, “I thought Baron already told you about Chris. What? He didn’t? My dear, that’s not good. You can’t have your husband keeping secrets from you now, can you?”
Baron’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“Mr. Waylon, aren’t you playing a little dirty here? You’ve known about Chris from the start!”
“Of course I knew,” Waylon said with mock innocence. “But I figured you’d tell my daughter yourself. Turns out you didn’t! Tell me, Baron–if you’re hiding little things like this, what about the big things? What happens if it’s something that affects my daughter’s interests, hmm?”
He looked far too entertained by his own meddling.
Baron groaned inwardly. Mr. Waylon’s really trying to stir the pot here.
“My dear, don’t listen to him! I can explain, really–I swear!” Baron said hurriedly, almost ready to raise his hand in oath.
Natalie caught the glint of amusement in Waylon’s eyes and the tension in Baron’s shoulders, and she couldn’t help rolling her eyes.
“Dad, stop scaring him. He’s still recovering; if you give him a heart attack, Mom will definitely come after you.”
Her words hit Waylon like an arrow to the chest.
“Natalie, I’m your father!”

“But he’s my husband,” she shot back with a teasing smile. “Without him, how would you have ever found me?”
That one line shut Waylon down completely.
He knew she was right.
If not for Baron, they’d still have no idea she was even alive. For that alone, Waylon owed the man for life.
“Fine, I won’t tease him anymore,” he said with a chuckle.
Baron let out a deep breath. “Dad, next time you want to mess with me, at least give me a warning first; my heart can’t take it.”
Waylon burst out laughing. What father wouldn’t be pleased to see his son–in–law put his daughter above all else?
A man who worried this much from a simple joke–clearly loved her deeply.
When the laughter died down, Waylon said, “If I warn you first, it wouldn’t be teasing, would it? Listen, as long as you treat my daughter sincerely, you’re my son. But if you ever hurt her, then you’re my enemy. Son or enemy–you decide.”
Baron grinned. “No need to think about that. I’m definitely choosing ‘son.”
Watching them banter, Natalie felt her heart swell with warmth.
She’d worried her father might resent Baron because of his past, but clearly, she’d been overthinking it.
“Okay, that’s enough from both of you,” she said, laughing. “I was asking about Chris. If he heard this, he’d be crying by now.”
From the way they were joking, she could tell Chris was fine.
Waylon chuckled. “Crying or not, I can’t say. But your husband’s the one who found him. He’s been resting under Baron’s care. I’m the one paying his salary, but the only thing I’ve gotten from him is a quick text saying he’s safe–I haven’t even seen his shadow.”
Baron jumped in right away. “Come on, dad, that’s not fair. You called me yourself, told me to find Chris as soon as possible. I was just following orders. I found him badly hurt–you told me since I knew the Witch Doctor, I should take him there for treatment. You even said it yourself, he got hurt protecting my wife, so it’s a work injury, all expenses on the Stone family. He’s still healing; of course he can’t come see you yet.”
