Just when Chris thought he could handle the attackers, they broke every rule of
engagement and went straight for the kill–one of them stabbed him. Normally, for a bodyguard, that would have been the end of it; getting hurt in the line of duty was part of the job, and no one could fault him for that.
But Chris thought of Baron. Baron had personally trained him; Waylon had always treated him well; and Natalie–she was the daughter the Stone family had fought so hard to find. He’d heard how Ruby had fallen ill over her.
So that foolish, loyal man–bleeding and half–conscious–forced himself up again and charged back at his attackers like a madman.
When he realized he couldn’t win, he decided to take them down with him. Thankfully, they were quick enough to dodge; otherwise, he really would have died there as a martyr. Even so, he crashed into a concrete pillar with full force, his head splitting open, blood pouring down his face before everything went black again.
The mercenaries, afraid of drawing attention, dumped his unconscious body in a back–alley trash bin and left him there to die.
When Baron captured Anna and tortured the truth out of her about Rachel, he also asked about Chris–but Anna didn’t even know who he was. That left Baron to question the mercenaries.
When he finally learned that Chris had been thrown into a garbage bin behind an alley, he immediately called Waylon.
Waylon had been swamped with other matters, but when he heard that Baron had found Chris -and learned how bravely the man had protected Natalie–he wired Baron ten million on the spot. He told him to do whatever it took to save Chris.
Of course, Baron refused to take the money. Chris had been hurt protecting Natalie; Baron would see to his recovery no matter what, and he wasn’t about to accept payment for it.
But Waylon had said, “The money’s not for you, so what are you turning it down for? You think the Stones are short on cash? Money can’t always buy loyalty like Chris’s. It’s our family’s fortune to have someone like him. If you won’t take it, give it to Chris. It’s the Stone family’s reward for his bravery.”
Baron mimicked Waylon’s expression and tone perfectly as he recounted it, and Natalie’s eyes welled up.

“Dad… thank you.”

She knew he’d said all that for her sake. By honoring Chris that way, he was making sure the man’s loyalty to her would only deepen.
Being hugged twice in one day made Waylon’s heart unexpectedly light. But hearing her choked–up voice, he softened.
“Silly girl,” he murmured. “I’m your father. Doing things for you isn’t something you ever have to thank me for.”
“Dad-” Natalie whined playfully, clinging tighter, and Waylon’s heart melted completely. Suddenly, that ten million didn’t feel wasted at all.
Baron, on the other hand, couldn’t help a pang of jealousy at the sight. That’s my wife. He was the one who was hurt, wasn’t he? Didn’t he deserve a hug too? Still, seeing Natalie so happy–so content–made it hard for him to stay bitter.
As long as she was smiling, as long as her family truly cared for her, he could live with them stealing his wife’s affection now and then.
Just then, the driver suddenly slowed to a stop.
“Mr. Waylon, Mr. Baron, Ms. Stone–we’ve arrived.”
The three of them instantly grew more serious.
Waylon glanced out the window, frowning.
“Huh?”
Natalie turned to him. “Dad? What is it?”
Waylon’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“This looks like the old Stone residence.”
Baron paused. “Dad, are you sure?”
The neighborhood was filled with old villas–private estates, most of them abandoned. Years ago, there had been a fire here, forcing the owners to move out; since then, the area had been left vacant.
