“Uncle Logan, let me take her place! Let her go! She’s just a young woman–she doesn’t stand a chance against a tiger! You’re sending her to her death!”
The man stepped in front of Yvonne, shielding her with his battered body.
Yvonne’s throat tightened when she saw him like that–covered in wounds, not a single patch of unbroken skin left on him, yet still trying to protect her.
“Alden, move!” she shouted through gritted teeth. “That scumbag will never let go of a money- making opportunity! To him, I’m just a tool–a tool he can use to bleed others dry. Whether I live or die, he couldn’t care less!”
Natalie and Baron exchanged a look when they heard her words, their eyes falling on the frail- looking man in front of her. He was alarmingly thin, his complexion deathly pale, eye sockets hollow, skin clinging to bone. His body was covered in scars–some old, some fresh, some already rotting.
And
yet, he stood there without hesitation, protecting Yvonne with every ounce of strength he had left.
So this was Alden? The same Alden who’d been adopted by Uncle Xenon? Natalie and Waylon both frowned deeply.
When Logan saw Alden step out, his expression instantly darkened.
“Who let him out? Get him back inside, now!” he snapped furiously.
But Alden pulled out a pair of scissors from who–knows–where and pressed them against hist own neck.
“Uncle Logan, if you don’t let her go today, I’ll die right in front of you! And when I do–don’t you think Mr. Waylon overseas will find out everything you’ve been hiding all these years? You really believe he can’t touch you just because he’s not here?”
Alden’s voice trembled with fury, but his gaze was steady–unyielding.
That defiance made Logan’s brows draw together. Alden couldn’t die yet.
But the stage was already set; there was no going back now.
Just then, Jacob and the others began getting restless.

“Hey, Mr. Logan, what’s going on? Are we starting or not? I’ve got other plans later!”

“Yeah. Mr. Logan, we came here for a show! If this is what you call entertainment, don’t expect us to come next time!”
The others chimed in, egging him on.
Logan’s jaw tightened. The arrow had already left the bow–he couldn’t stop now.
“Alden, I’ll give you one last chance. Go back! This has nothing to do with you! That woman’s got nothing to do with you either. So many others have come through here before, and you didn’t interfere then. What’s so different about today?”
Alden’s face twisted in pain at his words.
“So many women died in that monster’s jaws–and you have the nerve to talk about it? I couldn’t save them; that’s my failure! But this one–you can’t touch her!”
His hand trembled slightly. It was clear he wasn’t used to standing up like this, but the determination in his eyes left everyone stunned.
Logan’s face darkened with rage.
Out of nowhere, a whip appeared in his hand. He lashed it straight across Alden’s arm.
“You really think I won’t kill you? Alden, I must’ve gone too easy on you lately–now you think you can threaten me? What the heck are you? You’re just a dog I raised! And now that dog dares to bark at me?”
Logan shouted as he struck again and again, each crack of the whip cutting into Alden’s flesh.
Alden still had the scissors at his throat; he hadn’t expected Logan to lash out so suddenly–or to ignore his threats entirely. The split second of shock was all it took. The whip struck his arm, and the pain tore a scream from his throat. His hand jerked, the scissors slicing across his neck, spraying blood as they flew from his grip.
“Alden!”
Yvonne’s eyes went red in an instant.
She lunged forward, snatching the falling scissors, ignoring the rope biting into her neck, and thrust them toward Logan.
But the rope was too short. She didn’t even make it halfway before it yanked her back violently -hard enough to nearly strangle her.
